The concept \ncombines hospitality, art, and design in a truly unique \nway. An extraordi-\nnary property – and a unique opportunity. Dr Kerstin \nOrtlechner, an internationally renowned dermatologist \nfrom Vienna, was looking for a new surgery and was \nimmediately impressed by the sacred aesthetics of \nthe space. Together with Studio Riebenbauer Vienna \nLos Angeles, a design was created that preserves \nthe sacred aesthetic but contrasts it with a futuristic \nand minimalist room concept. From the outset, the \naim was to create a surgery that would set new global \nstandards and attract international attention in the \narchitecture and design environment – for its design \nlanguage, spatial concept, and also its illumination. \nThe aesthetics were to be minimalist, with light grey \nwalls, polished aluminium surfaces and mirrors, and \nthe entrance was to be accentuated by LED lumi-\nnaires. In the centre of the sacred nave, two mirrored \nboxes were designed to act as treatment rooms. A \nformer confessional was converted into a beauty \nroom. Extensive renovation work, including new sky-\nlights and a large sliding glass door, was necessary to \nmake the building, originally built in 1860, fit for use as \na surgery.\n \nThe lighting posed a very special challenge: While \nthe decorative luminaires from Studio Riebenbauer's \nown SR-Products brand functioned as a visible part of \nthe design, the XAL luminaires were to remain subtly \nin the background and create the right mood for the \nspace. Sacred and futuristic. Thanks to the architec-\ntural conditions, it was necessary to use suspended \nluminaires. Using MOVE IT PRO, the character was \npreserved and the church nave’s open space was left \nlargely unchanged.
