Romantic Figures 5 is a series of
six playful prints reminiscent of
illustrated playing cards. The series
is a delightful mash-up of early
synthetic Cubist sentiments and
bold German Expressionist figures.
Synthetic Cubism of the early 20th
century began to blur the boundaries
between painting and sculpture
by offering a new understanding
of the pictorial surface. During the
same time, German Expressionism
broke away from traditional norms of
representing the human figure.
In Romantic Figures 5, the royal
princess appears to be disinterested
as she nonchalantly balances her
crown in her hand. Picasso’s Cubist
influence is seen in her single, closed
eye. Her raven hair is swept back
into a regal bun held by a diamond
