Romantic Figures 3 is a series of
six playful prints reminiscent of
illustrated playing cards. The series
is a delightful mash-up of early
synthetic Cubist sentiments and
bold German Expressionist figures.
Synthetic Cubism of the early 20th
century began to blur the boundaries
between painting and sculpture
by offering a new understanding
of the pictorial surface. During the
same time, German Expressionism
broke away from traditional norms of
representing the human figure.
Romantic Figures 3 wonderfully
embraces both artistic movements.
The captain of the King’s army is
seen here. Picasso’s influence is
evident in the captain’s Cubist facial
structure and the textural proportions
in the foreground of the print that
highlight various angular patterns
