Designed \nby Nisse and Kajsa Strinning, the String shelf won its first \ndesign prize in 1949. Based on three simple elements – \nthe shelf, the wall panel and the metal fitting – it can be \ncombined in an infinite number of configurations and is \nendlessly reinvented as it passes from one generation \nto the next. \nAll books and no shelves\nIn the late 1940s, vast number of books were being \nsold in Sweden. Even the smallest town had its own \nbookshop,  and salesmen often peddled their wares in \nthe workplace. With Swedish homes overflowing with \nbooks, the question naturally arose: where should they \nall be kept? Bonniers Folkbibliotek, one of Sweden’s \nlargest publishers, decided  to answer this question by \nholding a design competition in the spring of 1949. They \ncalled for a new kind of bookcase that would be affor-\ndable, wall-mounted, expandable and hold at least two \nmetres of books.\nNisse Strinning\nAt this time, a young Stockholm architect called Nisse \nStrinning had just begun his career. Made of blue wall \npanels and pine shelves, their design beat 194 entries from \naround Europe, the US and even as far away as Australia. \nCommercial production began soon afterwards, with only \none small modification. The dimensions were adjusted to \nensure that the wall panels and shelves could be packaged \nand sold in the same box.\nAn ingenious construction turns into success\nThe construction of the very first shelf was based on three \nsimple elements; the shelf, the wall panel and the metal fit-\nting. The dimensions of the shelves and wall panels were 78 \ncm wide, 75 cm high and 20 cm deep – exactly the same \nas they are today. Meaning you can connect a String from \n1949 with another from 2024. After a few short months, \nString became known all over Sweden, and in less than a \nyear over 40,000 systems had been sold.\nInternational success\nIn the years that followed, the String shelf began to appear\nin interior design magazines, at trade fairs and other im-\nportant exhibitions. Its popularity spread to the rest of\nEurope, the United States and South America. String shelves\nwere used in the offices of the UN Headquarters in New \nYork, and in 1954, String was awarded a gold medal at the\nMilan Trienniale. In the summer of 1955,  an Art Industry \nExhibition known as the H55, was held in Sweden, with nine \nnations participating: Denmark, Finland, France, Japan, \nNorway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and West \nGermany. The Strinnings took the opportunity to present \nseveral additions to their range as part of the ‘Home and \nInterior Design of the Future’ exhibition. \nThe legacy lives on\nToday, String comprises of an entire system and can be \ncombined in an infinite number of configurations. New \ncolours, materials, and accessories have been added over \ntime.
