This is meant both literally as rattan grows \nlike lianas around the trees but also figuratively speaking, \nbecause the use of rattan help preserving the rainforest as \nthere is no rattan production without the rainforest.\n80% of the world’s rattan resources grow in the Indonesian \nrain forest. Rattan is fast growing and regenerates in the \nspan of 5-7 years. In nature, rattan absorbs CO2 and \nproduces up to 35% more oxygen than a tree. Rattan \ncomes in 600 different variants and from these 40 can be \nused in the production of furniture. At Sika-Design we only \nuse the two best qualities called Tohiti and Manau.\nMaking rattan furniture is extensive work that requires \nmany skilled hands. The process already begins in the \nrainforest where experienced harvesters assess which \nlianas are mature enough to be cut down.\nRattan\nPROCESSING & MANUFACTURING\nPROCESSING & MANUFACTURING\nProcessing of rattan\nOur rattan grows in the Indonesian rainforest where it is \nharvested by hand. Before processing, rattan appears with \nsharp thorns which are scraped off before the lianas are \ntied up and taken back to the village.\nIn the village the rattan is classified based on type and size. \nThe rattan lianas are cleaned in water, and dried under the \nsun. The big rattan is dried in upright position to get rid \nof the water more easily while small rattan is dried lying \non the ground.
