A process that has been a continuous evolu-\ntion, never a forceful revolution.\nAn evolution achieved also with contributions from \ntalented artists and designers who have brought \nnew content to our textiles. Exactly 90 years ago \nRubelli exhibited at the Venice Biennale with velvets \ndesigned by Gio Ponti, a milestone in our history. \nMore recently we have benefited from the talents \nof Paola Navone, Peter Marino, Luca Nichetto and \nLuke Edward Hall.\nThe time has come for a more radical evolution. We \ntook the decision to appoint the skilled and very \nintellectual duo Simone Farresin and Andrea \nTrimarchi – who together set up Formafantasma \n– as creative directors at Rubelli. Their first chal-\nlenge has been the recent relaunch of Kieffer, a very \nsuccessful accomplishment. Now is the time for the \nmain undertaking: generating fresh new energy for \nRubelli, working alongside our design studio.\nI am very proud of the result, which represents \nperfectly what Rubelli seeks to be today. There are quite a few reasons \nfor that: Rubelli’s products are precious, meticu-\nlously handcrafted, and its heritage is so strong that \nit is inherently timeless. Timeless by nature and \ndesign.\nFrom these premises stems GArdenS. The collection \nfocuses on one of the most archetypal, era-spawning \nthemes of textiles: the botanical theme.\nGArdenS as a theme can easily be metaphorical.\nAs gardens are small ecosystems of different ele-\nments coexisting and completing each other, Rubelli \nproducts form a vibrant, meticulously cultivated \nlandscape. Gardens host herbs for medicine, vegeta-\nbles for food, symbolic plants, or beautiful decorative \nflowers. Sometimes plants are even secondary in a \ngarden: think of a Japanese dry garden. The collec-\ntion follows the same pattern of multiplicity.\nGArdenS has in fact a double spirit in terms of \napplication and approach: indoor and outdoor\u002Fhigh \nperformance. The home collection brings the garden \ninto the house through the extensive use of bright, \nfresh colours and figurative decorations coming from \ndifferent eras. The outdoor\u002Fhigh performance part \nfollows a reverse process. It explores the abstract, \ngeometric side of a garden, in elegant and subtle \ntones. The textures here are the protagonists.\nGArdenS explores botanical themes ranging in time \nand scale.\nIt’s a bouquet of decorative patterns, as you expect \nfrom Rubelli, but also of textures and especially of \ncolours.\n \nColours are arguably the most significant aspect of \nthe collection. They come from melons, pistachios, \nlemons, orchids. They are bright and shiny and fresh, \na verdant landscape. They intuitively adapt to the \ndifferent textiles giving uniformity to the collection. \nWhen applied to plain or semiplain textiles, they \nemotionally resonate as big patches of colours found \nin blooming fields. The decorative apparatus easily \ncombines tone on tone.\nThe textures are equally inspired by the chatoyant \npatterns found on large tree trunks, as well as by the \ntraces left by rain droplets in the fresh loam. Silks \nundergo mechanical and artisanal processes that \nreveal organic, unique movements in the textiles. \nThey become alive: they reflect the light in unex-\npected ways, almost following the seasons changing.\nGArdenS is conceived to highlight Rubelli’s qual-\nity staples: the richness of decorative motifs, the \noutstanding quality of silk, the depth and care of \ncolours, and the eclectic approach to techniques.\nEclecticism is also evident in the application of \ntextiles. Protagoniste, qui, sono le \ntrame. \nGARDENS prende in considerazione i temi botanici \nspaziando nelle epoche e nelle dimensioni.\nÈ un bouquet di motivi decorativi, come ci si aspetta da \nRubelli, ma anche di texture e soprattutto di colori.\nI colori sono verosimilmente l’aspetto centrale della \ncollezione. Sono i colori dei meloni, dei pistacchi, dei \nlimoni, delle orchidee. Sono luminosi, brillanti e freschi, \nun paesaggio lussureggiante. Si adattano istintivamente \nai diversi tessuti per dare uniformità alla collezione. \nQuando utilizzati nei tessuti uniti o falsi-uniti, emozio-\nnano come le grandi campiture di colore dei campi in \nfiore. L’impianto decorativo è un’elegante combinazione \ntono su tono.\nI tessuti materici si ispirano ai motivi cangianti che si \npossono trovare sui grandi tronchi, così come alle tracce \nlasciate sul terriccio fresco dalle gocce di pioggia. Le sete \nsono lavorate con processi meccanici e artigianali che \nsvelano nei tessuti movimenti organici e unici: prendono \nvita, riflettono la luce in modi inattesi, quasi seguendo il \nmutare delle stagioni.\nGARDENS è concepito per mettere in evidenza i punti \ndi forza qualitativi di Rubelli: la ricchezza dei motivi \ndecorativi, l’eccezionale qualità della seta, la profondità e \nla cura dei colori, e l’approccio eclettico alle tecniche.\nL’eclettismo è evidente anche nell’uso dei tessuti. homage to \nDomenico Gnoli, a constant inspiration for a long \ntime in our practice. The reasons for this are mul-\ntiple, sometimes more apparent, sometimes buried \ndeeper in our education and designer background.\nOur interest in Gnoli’s oeuvre is in how the mun-\ndane, everyday objects and surfaces become as \nrelevant as - if not more than - the human in \nnarrating the struggles and possibilities of daily life. \nThis vivid potential of objects is what interests us. \nSubject and object become one in his paintings.\nTo put it in Germano Celant’s words, Gnoli “worked \non the detail and the particulars, as if bent on har-\nnessing the sensual potential of objects. A way of \nfocusing on the intensity of apparently inanimate \nthings, like a bed or an armchair (…) transforming \nthem into an energetic and visual investment”.\nTo draw from Gnoli’s language seemed to us a very \nappropriate way to reveal all the complex, eloquent \nand history-permeated expertise that lies behind a \nsingle textile. Visually speaking, the photos balance \nrigorous composition and deeply human imperfec-\ntions. The photos were taken at the very messiest \nstage of domesticity: moving in. In fact, all the shoot-\ning took place in our own soon-to-be house close \nto Lake Maggiore. In a nearly finished house, every \nobject is supercharged with significance. It floats in \nan almost surreal space, where you can only perceive \nthe narrative of the daily life that will unfold after it.\nThe lights then become bright and the shadows \nstark. The camera’s depth of field almost nullified. \nIt’s a pictorial depiction of reality. Every nuanced \ndetail emerges at its fullest. Every colour vibrates \nfreely. It seemed an appropriate way to build a narra-\ntion of this collection, so meticulous in the smallest \nof patterns, and strenuous in its research and appli-\ncation of colours. Photographer Federico Ciamei’s \nwork is all this, embellished by a clever, light sense \nof humour, and deep empathy. \nEdited by\nFormafantasma\nIl servizio fotografico di GARDENS rende omaggio a \nDomenico Gnoli, che da tempo e costantemente ci ispira \nnel nostro lavoro. Le ragioni di questa scelta sono molte-\nplici: a volte più evidenti, a volte celate nel profondo della \nnostra formazione ed esperienza di designer.\nIl nostro interesse per l’opera di Gnoli è in come i semplici \noggetti e le superfici di tutti i giorni diventano rilevanti \n- tanto quanto, se non più, dell’uomo - nel narrare le \nbattaglie e le opportunità della vita quotidiana. È questo \ndinamico potenziale degli oggetti che ci interessa. Nei \nsuoi dipinti soggetto e oggetto diventano un tutt’uno.\nPer dirla con le parole di Germano Celant, Gnoli \n“lavorava sui dettagli e sui particolari, come se fosse \nintenzionato a sfruttare il potenziale sensuale degli \noggetti. Un modo per mettere a fuoco l’energia delle cose \napparentemente inanimate, come un letto o una poltrona \n(...) trasformandole in un investimento dinamico e visivo”.\nAttingere dal linguaggio di Gnoli ci è sembrato un modo \nmolto appropriato per rivelare tutta l’esperienza - com-\nplessa, eloquente e permeata di storia - che si cela dietro \nun singolo tessuto. Visivamente parlando, le foto bilan-\nciano una composizione rigorosa con quelle imperfezioni \ntanto umane. Le foto sono state scattate in quella che, \nrelativamente alla casa, è la fase più disordinata della \nvita: il trasloco. Tutte le riprese, infatti, sono state fatte \nnella nostra futura casa vicino al Lago Maggiore. In una \ncasa quasi finita, ogni oggetto viene oltremodo caricato di \nsignificato. Fluttua in uno spazio quasi surreale, dove si \npuò solo percepire la narrazione della vita quotidiana che \nlì poi si svolgerà.\nLe luci diventano intense e le ombre nette. La profon-\ndità di campo della fotocamera è quasi annullata. È una \nrappresentazione pittorica della realtà. Ogni minimo \ndettaglio emerge al massimo. Ogni colore vibra libera-\nmente. Ci sembrava un modo appropriato per costruire \nuna narrazione di questa collezione, così precisa anche \nnei disegni più piccoli ed esigente nella ricerca e nell’uso \ndei colori.
