\nEduardo Chillida. This year marks the 100th anniversary \nof Chillida's birth and, to celebrate the occasion, we have \ndecided to offer a renewed tribute to his legacy through \nfour new pieces. \nRenowned for his monumental works in steel and concre-\nte, his lesser-known work comprises an extensive body of \ndrawings and Gravitations (a series of collages). \nThe Gravitations were not simple overlapping paper cut-\nouts, but relief sculptures. Chillida playfully took the concept \nof gravitating almost to the limit, because the paper weighed \nso little. By suspending different types of paper he achieved \na dramatic effect, exerting a new tension in the way the \npaper fragments overlapped or intercalated, in turn creating \nspaces of light and shadow between them.\nThis tension was our prime focus in transforming each of the \nchosen works into a rug. By playing with craft techniques \nsuch as hand knotting, Soumak or hand tufting, as well as \nwith fibers, wool and silk, and with various heights, our new \ncollection captures that suspension that Chillida sought in \nhis gravitations.\nFour new pieces that broaden the Chillida collection. Three \nrugs and one tapestry in which craftsmanship, once again, \nis our only route to achieving the level of detail and exce-\nllence that we pursue in all our rugs.
