The fact that we were \ndeveloping a chair in plastic raised fundamental \nquestions as to why… and how. While de-\nsigning the chair, we started looking into the \nuse of recycled plastics. That in turn triggered \ndiscussion about the brand’s general position on \nsustainability and how the chair could become \nthe archetype for future strategies. \nWhat was the general process like? \n \nKG: The project was set up between \nthree partners. In addition to Magis and my \nteam, there was a highly specialized plastics \nmanufacturer on board from the very beginning. \nThis company was responsible for the structural \nengineering of the chair, mould construction \nand final production. The same company also \ndeveloped and patented a new type of recycled \npolypropylene, which we are exclusively using \nfor Bell Chair.\nHow did the project start?  \n \nKG: The project started with the \nhypothesis that we could develop a chair that \nwould sell to the public for just € 65 (excluding \nVAT). This figure conditioned everything: from \nthe technology and type of material we used, \nright down to the exact amount\u002Fweight of mate-\nrial per chair, its cycle time in production, logisti-\ncal footprint, etc. During the most active phase \nof development there was a constant exchange \nbetween us, the designers, and the engineers. I \nremember that, at one point, we were changing \nand adjusting the chair several times per day. My \nmost challenging task was to keep the overall \ndesign idea in view. In short: I had to make sure \nthat the chair wasn’t turning into an engineer’s \ndream, while losing its original design intent.\nWhat were the goals? \n \nKG: Our aim was to develop a \nhigh-quality chair with the bare minimum of \nmaterial. This target was important to us for \necological reasons, but it also had a strong eco-\nnomical impact on the project. We wanted Bell \nobject that, despite its undeniable success, is \nloaded with so much rejection! Looking for what \nis good about these types of chairs, I came to \nrealize just how rational they are. And from there \nI started to see the great potential of the project \n– in terms of design as well as sustainability.  \nThe simple fact that our chair uses no more than \n2.7 kg of plastic – almost half an average chair – \nillustrates this quite vividly. \nWhat role did your long-term collaboration with \nMagis play in the development of the Bell Chair?\n \nKG: We have been working together \nfor over 20 years. We have produced an impres-\nsive number of projects starting with Chair_One \naround the millennium. Obviously, not all projects \ncome up trumps. We have also done a large \nnumber of projects that never made it into pro-\nduction. Paradoxically, it is these unsuccessful \nprojects that have cemented our relationship. \nto be affordable for everyone. In order to achieve \nthis, we had to find the right balance between \ntechnology, performance and aesthetics. It took \nmany prototypes and a lot of testing to finally get \nto the chair we have in front of us now. It was a \nvery intense process of re-working the chair over \nand over, making it better and better. Everyone \ninvolved in the project put a lot of work and \ncommitment into it. But the project always had a \ngreat energy, and that carried us forward.\nBell Chair is made entirely of plastic. Why? \n \nKG: Simply because you cannot \nproduce a chair at this price using any other \ntechnology than plastic injection moulding. Of \ncourse, we did ask ourselves whether the world \nneeded such a chair in the first place. I was \nquite critical at first, but the more I got into it, \nthe more I could see a great opportunity for our \nproject. There is a need for chairs that are both \naffordable and versatile, but the products on the \nmarket tend to be either cheap or too exclusive. \nWe saw interesting potential in creating a very \neconomical, but well-designed, well-engineered \nchair. The big breakthrough came with the com-\nmitment from our supplier to provide us with a \nhigh-quality recycled material. This material is \nnot retrieved from post-consumer waste, but \nobtained from industrial waste. Thus, Magis turn \nthe waste accumulated by their own furniture \nproduction into a new product. \nDo you see the Bell project as a lodestar for the \nfurniture industry? \n \nKG: I hope that the story of Bell will \nherald a shift in the consciousness of the indus-\ntry. Our project shows that you can do things a \nlittle differently. Transparency and honesty were \nimperative for us. We want to show how we \nworked, what materials are used, to uncover the \nentire process. We are also ready to talk about \nthings that we were not able to achieve. In this \nsense, the project sets an example for a new \napproach.\nWhat did you learn from designing a monobloc \nchair? \n \nKG: If you think about it, the plastic \nmonobloc is the most popular chair in the world. \nIt has sold in its billions, but at the same time it \nis tainted with a lot of negative connotations: it is \nconsidered to be ugly and cheap, and it is com-\nmonly agreed that its widespread use is polluting \nour planet. It was clearly a challenge to tackle an \nAfter many years we both know each other very \nwell, which means that we can always count \non each other’s loyalty and trust. These are \nprecious assets in the industry, and they are key \nwhen working on ambitious projects like Bell.\nWhat is special about this relationship?\n \nKG: Eugenio Perazza, the founder \nand creative head of Magis, has always given \nme two things: incredible freedom and extraor-\ndinary challenges. This is a very special mixture \nand rare to find. Design development is never \nan easy business, there is always friction … \nand there are ups and downs.
