The outdoor \nfurniture sector has undergone huge change, with \na spectacular growth both in terms of the volume \nof the market and the aesthetic complexity.\nDQ.-\nFM.-\nI think that, with the pandemic, people have noticed \nthe relevance and value of high-quality products. \nGiven that now we spend much more time outside, \nwe see that people want to take the aesthetic and \ncomfort of indoor furniture outside. \nBefore, the collections that we made weren’t as \nversatile. Nowadays, we instead see it as normal to \nwant to put a sofa in the garden, for example. The \nline between interior and exterior has blurred a lot.\n¿Cómo creéis que ha evolucionado el diseño de interiores \ny exteriores en estos últimos años? \nEs un campo en continua evolución. El sector del \nmobiliario para exteriores ha experimentado un \ncambio gigantesco, con un crecimiento \nespectacular en los últimos años ya sea en temas \nde volumen de mercado como de complejidad \nestética en la ofera de las distintas marcas. \nDQ.-\nCreo que, con la pandemia, la gente se ha dado \ncuenta de la relevancia y el valor de los productos \nde buena calidad. Dado que ahora hacemos \nmuchas más actividades al aire libre, vemos que la \ngente quiere transporar la estética y el confor de \nlos muebles interiores al exterior.\nAntes, las colecciones que hacíamos no eran tan \nversátiles. Because of \nthat I imagine the collection in an empty and clean \narchitectural space, and also in a hotel or a private \nvilla. Overall, it is a versatile collection that can work \nin many spaces. \nFM.-\nDQ.-\nIn our projects we always look for a product that \ncan adapt. We do this so that we can imagine them \neither in super contemporary spaces or in classical \nspaces, or even as pieces that help to make the \nboundaries between inside and outside disappear.\n¿En qué tipo de espacios os la imagináis?\nPara mí, las piezas son ideales para el exterior, \nporque con sus formas geométricas se pueden \nproducir interesantes juegos de luces y sombras. \nPor eso me imagino la colección en un espacio \nvacío, limpio y arquitectónico, y también en un hotel \no una villa privada. In both Italy and Spain, we are used to \nliving life outside thanks to the good weather. \nFM.-\nDQ.-\nThanks to that luck we have the possibility to \nappreciate nature and the outdoors in a privileged \nway. In addition, surely for this reason both \ncountries have an affinity for the way that we face \nlife, in the way that we live and the way we enjoy \nthe environment. \n¿Qué diferencias o similitudes palpáis entre la forma de \nvivir los espacios exteriores desde vuestros respectivos \nlugares de origen, Italia y España? \nCreo que España e Italia comparen muchas cosas, \ncomo el clima. Tanto en España como en Italia \nestamos acostumbrados a hacer vida al aire libre \ngracias al buen tiempo. \nFM.-\nDQ.-\nGracias a esa suere tenemos la posibilidad de \napreciar la naturaleza y los exteriores en un \nmodo privilegiado. Además, seguramente por \nello en ambos países tenemos una afinidad en el \nmodo de afrontar la vida, en el modo de vivir y \ndisfrutar del entorno. \n“The play of light and shadow. The \ncontrast between empty and full. \nThe mixture of opposite concepts”.\n“El juego de luces y sombras. \nEl contraste entre vacíos y llenos. \nLa mezcla de conceptos opuestos”.\nWhat is the perfect outdoor environment?\n It could depend on your taste and location. I don’t \nbelieve that a perfect environment exists, but there \nis a good solution for every environment. \nDQ.-\nFM.-\nIf we understand ‘perfect’ to mean an environment \nthat has all the indispensable elements, I think we \ncould say that our collection has it all. With \nGANDIABLASCO we created a very iconic product, \nand since then we have created, we have designed \nthe sofa, the coffee table, the pouf etc. ONSEN \nencapsulates everything that we could need in an \noutdoor space in your home. \nThe idea was to move everything we have inside the \nhouse to the outside, and that’s the reason why we \nhave included in the collection several auxiliary \nfurniture that contributes to making any space a \nmore comfortable, flexible and habitable place.\n¿Cómo es el ambiente exterior privado perfecto? \nQuizás dependa del gusto y de la localización. No \ncreo que exista un ambiente perfecto sino una \nbuena solución para cada ambiente.\nDQ.-\nFM.-\nSi entendemos “perfecto” como aquel ambiente \nque tiene todos los elementos indispensables, creo \nque podríamos decir que nuestra colección los \ntiene todos. Hay un \ndiálogo entre estructura y elementos en tensión. El \ncontraste entre materiales extremamente duros y la \ncomodidad y suavidad de los cojines es ejemplo de \nesa contraposición de lenguajes y características \nque encontramos continuamente en la naturaleza.\nDQ.-\nFM.-\nExtacto, la naturaleza ha sido clave en la concepción \nde esta colección. Tanto los colores como los \nacabados son esenciales y prescinden de capas \nsuperfluas. El mensaje que queríamos mandar era el \nde la transparencia: presentamos el acero y el cuero \ntal y como son. Cuando el observador se fija en un \ndiseño ONSEN puede ver a simple vista de qué \nmateriales está compuesto. La idea era lanzar este \nmensaje para que el usuario se sienta todavía más a gusto \nsabiendo que las piezas están hechas a parir de materiales \nbuenos y poco trabajados para mantener sus propiedades \nnaturales.\nDe hecho, cuando estábamos en el periodo de pruebas y \nhaciendo prototipos, hicimos un laqueado al metal y vimos \nque no quedaba bien, porque no se veía si era metal o \nplástico. Rechazamos esa idea y nos centramos en resaltar \nel producto al natural, porque no queríamos engañar al ojo \ny usar un material lacado para que pareciera otro.\nEn cuanto a la arquitectura, creo que la colección es muy \nsencilla y combina bien con espacios arquitectónicos \ndiversos. La desarrollamos con la intención de transmitir \ncalma, un poco como ocurre en la arquitectura japonesa. \nNos inspiramos en la racionalidad, en formas geométri-\ncas y elementales a las que no les hace falta decoración \nmuy cargada.\nWhat imporance has connection with nature had on the \ndevelopment of ONSEN? And how about its interaction with the \narchitecture?\nONSEN is a project in which the design and the \nrelationship between the different elements speak \na similar language to architecture. There is a \ndialogue between structure and elements of \ntension. The contrast between extremely hard \nmaterials and the comfort and softness of the \ncushion is an example of the juxtaposition of the \nlanguages and characteristics that we continuously \nfind in nature.\nDQ.-\nFM.-\n Exactly, nature has been key in the conception of \nthis collection. Both the colours and the finishes are \nessential, and they don’t need superfluous layers. \nThe message that we wanted to send was one of \ntransparency: we presented the steel and the \nleather as they are. When the observer looks at the \nONSEN design they can simply see the materials that were \nused. The idea was to release this message so that the \nuser always feels more at ease knowing that the pieces are \nmade from good, barely worked materials so that they \nmaintain their natural properties. \nIn fact, when we were in the stages of making and testing \nprototypes, we made a varnish for the metal and we saw \nthat it didn’t look good, because you couldn’t tell whether \nthe material was metal or plastic. We rejected that idea \nand focused on emphasising the natural product, because \nwe didn’t want to trick people by using a varnished \nmaterial so that it looked like another. \nWith respect to the architecture, I think that the collection \nis very simple and works well in diverse architectural \nspaces.  We developed it with the intention of bring calm, \na bit like in Japanese architecture. What \nsensations do you get from this iconic staging chosen by \nGANDIABLASCO and ONSEN? Do ar, architecture and design \nspeak the same language?\nI think that GANDIABLASCO has chosen an \nincredible location because the architecture is \nmixed very well with these outdoor spaces. \nFM.-\nDQ.-\nWhen they showed us the location for the first time \nour response was super positive. We fully believe in \nthe relationship between architecture and design: \ntwo languages that differ only in scale but that \nshare all the vocabulary of proportion, material and \nexpressivity… \nIs curious how in the Xavier Corberó space there is \nalso a play between the empty and the full. We say \nthat architecture speaks a bit of the same language \nas our designs. That mix between something heavy \nlike cement and the lighter designs is perfect to me. \nFM.-\nCorberó se sentía un escultor urbano, y esta localización es la \nquintaesencia de la escultura integrada en la arquitectura. ¿Qué \nsensaciones os provoca esta icónica puesta en escena elegida \npor GANDIABLASCO para ONSEN? ¿Are, arquitectura y diseño \nhablan un mismo lenguaje?\nYo creo que GANDIABLASCO ha elegido una \nubicación increíble porque la arquitectura se mezcla \nmuy bien con estos espacios de exterior. \nFM.-\nDQ.-\nCuando nos enseñaron por primera vez la \nlocalización nuestra respuesta fue súper positiva. \nCreemos plenamente en la relación entre \narquitectura y el diseño: dos lenguajes que difieren \nsolo en escala pero que comparen todos los \nvocablos de proporción, materialidad, expresividad...\nEs curioso cómo en el espacio Xavier Corberó \ntambién se produce un juego entre lo vacío y lo \nlleno. Digamos que la arquitectura habla un poco el \nmismo lenguaje que nuestros diseños. Esa mezcla \nentre algo pesado como el cemento y los diseños, \nmás ligeros, me resulta perfecta.\nFM.-\nThe brutalist character of the Xavier Corberó House Museum \ncontrasts with the delicateness of the soft cement arches, that \nseem to superimpose themselves and change according to the \nposition of the sun. What role does light and shadow play in the \nperception of spaces and ONSEN’s designs?\nJust as you described the passage of light through \nthe architecture of the Corberó house, ONSEN \nrelates to it in the same way: the light creates \npaterns of shade in between the leather straps and \nreflections on the shiny wood, changing the \nappearance of the product according to the time \nof day. \nDQ.-\nFM.-\nThose projections and shadows are fundamental for \nthe collection. I like to imagine this collection in an \narchitectural space precisely because these \npaterns of light and shadow are produced by and \nform part of the pieces. The collection interacts \nvery well in spaces like hotels or private patios and \nnot so much in forests or green spaces, because \nalthough it harmonises with nature, it is designed \nto be in contact with cement and other materials.\nEl carácter brutalista de la casa-escultura de Xavier Corberó \ncontrasta con la delicadeza de los suaves arcos de cemento, \nque parecen superponerse y cambiar según la incidencia de la \nluz del sol. ¿Qué papel tienen los juegos de luces y sombras en \nla percepción de los espacios y los diseños de ONSEN?\nAsí como bien describes el paso de la luz a través \nde la arquitectura de la casa Corberó, ONSEN se \nrelaciona de igual manera con ella: la luz crea juegos \nde sombras entre la cinchas de cuero y reflejos \nsobre el acero cepillado cambiando la percepción \ndel producto a según que momento del día.\nDQ.-\nFM.-\nEsas proyecciones y sombras son fundamentales en \nla colección. Me gusta imaginarme esta colección \nen un espacio arquitectónico justamente para que \nestos juegos de luces y sombras se produzcan y \nformen pare de las piezas.
