cabinetmaking and upholstery. It \nis in final assembly, in the capable hands \nof Jardel, where all stages of production \ncome together to create the final piece.\nAfter finishing and upholstery, products \nare passed on to Jardel for final assembly. \nHaving worked in all areas of the factory, \nJardel has a deep understanding of the \ncraft of our products, allowing him to \nskilfully make final adjustments to pieces \nbefore they are sent to Quality Control. \nHe is essentially the first stage of QC, \nas he meticulously checks the finishing, \nassembly, hardware, alignment, and all \nother details of a product, fine-tuning as \nhe goes. He finds satisfaction in seeing \neach piece of furniture in its finished \nstage, and with each product in our diverse \nrange made to order, every production week \nis different, creating a variety he also \nenjoys. Jardel’s great depth of knowledge \nallows him to rise to the challenge each \nday brings, and ensure strict De La Espada \nstandards are met.\nIn warm weather, Jardel travels to work \nby bike or motorcycle and can be found on \nweekends riding along the Silver Coast with \nloved ones.\nFinal Assembly: Jardel\nDe La Espada furniture is built with a \nrespect for the unique characteristics of \nsolid wood, which requires our craftspeople \nto take intelligent decisions regarding \nstability and aesthetics at every stage of \nmanufacture. This is particularly evident \non our tabletops and chests of drawers, \nwhere the expansive surface highlights the \nexpression of the wood grain.\nIsabel applies her 26 years of experience \nto the selection, sequencing, and gluing of \ntimber for planar surfaces and chests of \ndrawers. She works closely with Celeste, who \nbrings 29 years of experience, and together \nthey create the stunning compositions of \ntimber you find on De La Espada furniture.\nOUR CRAFTSPEOPLE\nFor tabletops, they choose the planks and \nsequence that are most pleasing to the eye, \nalways using the maximum plank width that \ntheir demanding standards for strength \nand consistency allow. This varying plank \nwidth is characteristic of De La Espada \nproducts, a detail that honours the \nnatural beauty of the material. I was also inspired by the \ntraditional Portuguese espigueiro, a kind of \nbarn used to store and dry corn, elevated from \nthe ground. But foremost, I reinterpreted \nthe Portuguese traditional single family \nhouse – a two storey rectangular volume \nwith a pitched roof, designed with a simple \nand operative principle, in a familiar and \ndomestic scale.”\n“Casa da Escrita’s project is the winning \nproposal of a competition promoted by \nCoimbra City Hall in 2004. One of the main \nfeatures of the project is to reuse the \nbuilding in a contemporary way, and give \nit new meaning. The project is focused on \nrestoration and preservation, integrating \nnew living uses which allow to maintain \nthe memory of the building. In Casa da \nEscrita we are not looking for unnecessary \nruptures, but rather for a hybrid time, which \nis achieved by consolidating materiality \nand thus establishes a relation between \ntradition and modernity.”\n“I think good architecture has to move us and stir emotions.”\nThe architecture of João Mendes Ribeiro is \nwhere everything intersects: time, where \nthe historic merges with modernity; space, \nwhere the landscape and the building are \none; and movement, where the inhabitant’s \nexperience is central. The Coimbra-based \narchitect’s \nemotive \ndesigns \nhave \nwon \nprestigious awards including the RIBA \nAward for International Excellence and \nthe European Union Prize for Contemporary \nArchitecture. Ribeiro has also won awards \nfor his stage designs for theatre and dance \n— work that broadens his understanding of \nspace, scale, lighting, and movement: “I \nam deeply influenced by other artistic and \ndisciplinary areas, like visual arts and \nperforming arts. My work comes from the \nconstant experimentation between the two. \nThis brings about unexpected connections \nand styles that redefine the limits of \narchitecture.”\nRibeiro was educated at the Architecture \nFaculty of the University of Porto (FAUP), \nco-established \nby \nhighly \ninfluential \narchitect and educator, Fernando Távora, \nwhose methodology has inspired numerous \ncontemporary architects including Pritzker \nPrize-winning \nalumni \nÁlvaro \nSiza \nand \nEduardo Souto de Moura. The approach \nTávora espoused, modernity with sensitivity \nfor history and locale, has created an \nexceptional \ngeneration \nof \nPortuguese \narchitects who have given this small country \nsignificant \ninternational \nrecognition. \nTávora’s influence on Ribeiro came not only \nfrom education, but in the workplace: “I \nwas Fernando Távora’s assistant at Coimbra \nUniversity \nArchitecture \nDepartment \nfor \nseven years and for that time I had the \nprivilege of observing his sensitivity and \nwisdom. In many conversations, inside and \noutside of the department, I learned from \nhim the importance of the relationship \nbetween heritage and new buildings. Távora \nalways knew how to work with pre-existences, \ndesigning modern architecture which is \nsensitive to local shapes and values and \nestablishing a possible synthesis between \ntradition and modernity.”\nWhile the core values of Ribeiro’s work are \nshared with his contemporaries, his creative \nvision is unmistakably his own. His modern \ninterventions seem to venerate the historic \nelements, amplifying them. His projects \nshow a restraint, a focus on the essential, \nfrom which life bursts forth. The landscape \nseems like liquid, penetrating the walls of \nhis buildings, through oversized windows or \nthe choice of materials. “I am constantly \nlooking for a way to connect and bond the \nbuilding and the people with nature and \ngeology.”\nMateriality focuses on the local and the \ntrue: “The use of materials that are deeply \nconnected with the rigorous construction \nprocess (artisanal, in some cases), are the \nprincipal features of my work. The choice \nof materials in each project translates a \ncertain rapport with the territory, which \nis a concept that is very dear to the \ntradition of the Architecture Faculty of \nthe University of Porto (FAUP). Therefore, \ncolour and palettes are always given by the \nnatural colour and texture of the handmade \nor natural materials we use.”\nSketching is an important part of his \ndesign process, and is where each project \nbegins: “For me, it’s essential to ‘think’ \nthe \nproject \nthrough \nthe \nprocess \nof \nsketching. Sketching is a constant tool \nthat I use and it’s part of a daily ritual. \nSketching and drawing first starts as a copy \nof the site and its reality and later, as \nthe project progresses, it transforms to \nan experimental act. Sketching is also a \nresearch tool wherefrom the architecture \nemerges, not as a technique, but as an \nevidence of life itself.”\nRibeiro’s work most often focuses on \nrenovation projects, where opportunities \nfor fusing old and new abound. He explains \nthe fusion thus: “In a refurbishment \nand rehabilitation project I am always \ninterested in using the existing building \nand exploring the qualities and potential \nof the spaces it contains. Each specific \nor \npeculiar \nfeature \nof \nthe \nexisting \nbuilding is a pretext for change in the \nproject, in order to incorporate it in the \ndesign of the space. In order to comply \nto modern necessities, in some projects \nwe will admittedly design that which is \nephemeral in confrontation with that which \nis perennial (the building). His work involves operating, \nprogramming \nthe \nCAM \n(Computer \nAided \nManufacturing) that drives the machine’s \nmovements, and overseeing the work of his \nteam. The combination of a 3-tool head \nand a mobile split bed allows this CNC \nmachine to efficiently create complex \ncomponents \nwith \nexcellent \nprecision, \nmaking it particularly well-suited to the \nmanufacture of chairs and other intricate \npieces with sculptural qualities.\nAfter receiving timber parts cut to the \napproximate dimensions of the final compo-\nnent, Nelson assesses each, choosing which \nface of the plank should be most prominent. \nHe alters the machine’s programming when \nnecessary, changing the starting point or \norder of operations to optimise the per-\nformance and beauty of the plank. Applying \nexpertise gained from his interior design \neducation and years of hands-on experience, \nhe ensures every component is machined to \na high level of perfection made possible by \nthe exactitude of the machine.\nTaking advantage of his proximity to the \nSilver Coast, Nelson practises kite surfing, \npaddleboarding, and even a bit of seaside \ncapoeira in his free time. Afterwards he \nlikes to refuel with one of his favourite \ntraditional meals, Portuguese stew.\nCNC Machining: Nelson\nGuida has worked at our factory for \ntwenty years in various departments from \nsanding and finishing to operating the CNC \nmachinery. She has many years of experience \nmaking clothing in her own time, and now \napplies that expertise to her role sewing \nupholstery.\nThe technical sensibility and eye for \nperfection that allowed Guida to excel as \na CNC operator are what drive her success \non the sewing machine as well. We have \nhigh standards for the consistency of our \nseams, and the often-sculptural forms of \nour furniture call for a particularly high \nlevel of skill, a steady hand, and a great \ndeal of patience.\nOUR CRAFTSPEOPLE\nWhen working on new designs, our product \ndevelopment team consults Guida and the \nrest of the sewing team on how to achieve \ntechnically challenging stitching, refine \npatterns, and create features such as \nintentional creasing. The seamstresses’ \nunderstanding of the craft allows them \nto offer solutions that create an optimal \nfinal result.\nIn her free time, Guida tends to the flowers \nin her garden, and takes great
