Fiore all’oc-\nchiello dei cantieri Ansaldo di Genova Sestri Ponente, fu varata il 16 giugno del \n1951 e divenne presto la nave passeggeri più grande, più veloce e sicura dell’in-\ntera flotta italiana. Il concorso per gli arredi delle sale della prima classe venne \nvinto dal già celebre Gio Ponti e Nino Zoncada, architetto di origini veneziane \nche aveva disegnato con il collega svedese Nils Einar Eriksson lo Stockholm, il \ntransatlantico che solo cinque anni dopo, per un errore umano del comandante, \nsperonò e affondò proprio l’Andrea Doria al largo delle coste del Massachusetts. \nPonti e Zoncada disegnarono gli arredi interni del grande transatlantico facen-\ndo dell’Andrea Doria un ambasciatore del gusto italiano nel mondo, compendio \nperfetto del raffinato stile anni 50, ma con una forte attenzione alla funzionalità. \nTra i vari accorgimenti progettuali, le poltrone disegnate per il grande salone delle \nfeste furono realizzate da Cassina con baricentro basso per contrastare il mo-\nvimento ondivago e con puntali in metallo smussato sulle gambe per evitare di \nsegnare i pavimenti in linoleum. Tra gli altri transatlantici disegnati fra i ‘50 e i ’60 \nda Gio Ponti, Nino Zoncada e Gustavo Pulitzer e arredati da Cassina, si ricordano \nil Conte Biancamano, il Conte Grande, la Giulio Cesare, la Michelangelo oltre alle \nnavi della Costa Armatori.\nOf the more than 58 furnished ocean liners, the Andrea Doria was the perfect ex-\nample of collaboration between great masters of Italian style and corporate cul-\nture. The pride of the Ansaldo shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente, it was launched \non 16 June 1951 and soon became the largest, fastest and safest passenger ship \nof the entire Italian fleet. The competition for the furnishings of the first class was \nwon by the already renowned Gio Ponti and Nino Zoncada, an architect of Vene-\ntian origin who had designed with his Swedish colleague Nils Einar Eriksson the \nStockholm, the ocean liner that only five years later, due to a human error of the \ncommander, rammed and sank the Andrea Doria off the coast of Massachusetts. \nPonti and Zoncada designed the interior furnishings of the great transatlantic lin-\ner, making the Andrea Doria an ambassador of Italian style in the world, a perfect \ncompendium of the refined trends of the 50s, but with a strong focus on func-\ntionality.
