Alla fine degli anni \nNovanta Luigi Billiani, che ha lo stesso nome del \nnonno e una formazione da architetto, decide di \nintraprendere la strada del design e insieme alla \nmoglie Veronik Romanutti crea la Billiani di oggi.\nStoria ⁄ History\n05\n04\nHistory _ Billiani started up in 1911 when Luigi, a carpenter \noriginally from Carnia, and his wife Delina, daughter of a \nchair maker from Mariano, opened a small factory in Manzano. \nBetween Manzano and Mariano there were just over ten \nkilometres as well as a border: the one that separated the \nAustro-Hungarian Empire from the Kingdom of Italy. The \ncompany, which produced curved and wicker wooden chairs, \nwas family-run. These were the years in which what was to \nbecome the chair district began to take shape after the Second \nWorld War: Luigi’s children — the brothers Ottone, Orlando, \nLino and Bruno — would experience the boom years as major \nplayers. In 1986 the third generation joined the company and \nBilliani became synonymous with seating for large orders, \ndestined especially abroad. At the end of the nineties Luigi \nBilliani, who has the same name as his grandfather and had \ntrained as an architect, decided to go down the design path \nand, together with his wife Veronik Romanutti, created the \nBilliani of today.\nDesign — Good design and woodworking ability have always \nbeen the hallmark of Billiani products, but it is only since 1997 \nthat we have started to talk about design in concrete terms. \nThe debut was at the 2002 Milan Furniture Fair, with a \nprovocative stand on which flew the flag of design: Marco \nFerreri designed it, also the author of a chair that was short-\nlisted for the Compasso d’Oro. While the link with tradition \nwas ensured by the projects of  master Werther Toffoloni, \nthe partnership with Emilio Nanni opened up a new era: \ncolourful, trendy, carefree. The list of designers grew, as did \nthe list of projects, some of which were exhibited in museums, \nfrom the MoMA in New York to the Milan Triennale. The \nchair remained central and wood became the leitmotif of \nthe collection.  Cristina Celestino was entrusted with the \nartistic direction in 2019 and it is she who has made the latest \ntransformation. The original geographical displacement that \nbrought Billiani to Manzano in 1911 has become the focus of her \nvision: the look has become warmer and more sophisticated, \nthe fabrics have taken on heightened importance, the products \nsuit residential settings. Today, Billiani remains first and \nforemost synonymous with wooden chairs - but the Billiani \nworld has expanded.\nBuon disegno e capacità di lavorare il legno \nsono da sempre la cifra dei prodotti Billiani, ma \nè dal 1997 che s’inizia a parlare concretamente \ndi design. Il debutto è al Salone del Mobile di \nMilano del 2002, con uno stand provocatorio su \ncui sventola la bandiera del design: l’ha proget-\ntato Marco Ferreri, autore anche di una sedia \nche sfiora il Compasso d’Oro. The seats, in \nthin plywood, combine the comfort of an ample surface with the formal and \nconstructive elegance of Swiss design. The arched form of the large back has \nbeen gauged to permit interlocking with the seat, in a game of balancing of \nforces of pressure and tension that simulates a micro-work of architecture, \nwhile referencing the chairs of the Alpine tradition.
