(en) / Lie on the ground and feel the planet turning.
This is a phrase that has resonated in my mind ever since
I discovered the story of one of the great science fiction writers,
Ursula K. Le Guin, where for the people she imagined, initiation
consists of lying on the ground and feeling the planet turn.
This phrase resonates because it encompasses many
things: for us, sometimes, the desire for silence, for stillness; but
also the desire to connect to the earth. Touch to be present and
to understand. I was reminded of the material these furnishings
are made of: wool, wood, and stone. The wool is the very fine
wool of Cloth Ermenegildo Zegna, used to upholster Carpanese
Home padded furniture. The wood is that of the pieces designed
by Giorgio Bonaguro and Matteo Zorzenoni, with art direction
by Studio Federico Peri.
The stone — or rather the concrete, in a special shade of
red — is that of the house where the photos were taken. Glass
and light in Mide Architetti’s design: a house that opens up,
welcoming nature and greenery.
But lying on the ground is also simply sitting on an
armchair, a sofa. Touch the fabrics. Wood. A living force. Back to
wood: the wood of the Veronese cabinet-makers. Back to wool:
it is no coincidence that Zegna was one of the first textile brands
to think ‘green’, opening the Oasi Zegna in Piedmont where the
company was founded; a park in the Biellese Alps famous for its
rhododendrons.
Touch, understand. Because, as Ursula K. Guin suggests,
we will understand how to save the world, and ultimately
ourselves, not only with our minds, but also with our bodies.
