Beh, questa è poesia, direte. Nella realtà tutto procede
dall’esperienza, noi impariamo soltanto dai fallimenti,
scartando le soluzioni sbagliate. Non si può dimostrare
l’esistenza degli angeli. Ma se le prove si trovassero al di fuori
del vostro calcolo razionale? Per scoprirle, dovreste liberarvi
delle certezze che vi sostengono, uscire dalla traccia delle
cose sicure e sperimentate. Senza perdervi, naturalmente e
lasciandovi andare ai sogni.
Lungo il percorso vi guideranno certi segni, gli stessi su cui
contano le anime semplici, o gli artisti. Può bastare una gioia
improvvisa, senza motivo, a indicarvi che siete sulla strada
giusta. Succede quando di colpo tutto si fa differente; al posto
dell’universo gelido, regolato da leggi cieche e dominato da
forze immani, vi si mostra la bellezza, il calore, il conforto,
il sogno, simile all’eco di una musica lontana. I pensieri
tenebrosi cedono il passo a uno scoppio di riso. Il tempo di
assaporarlo, e tutto è già scomparso. Eppure, pensateci: forse
quando è successo mentre eravate addormentati un angelo
vegliava su di voi, non potevate essere del tutto soli.

Well, you will say, this is only poetry. Everything is the result of
experience, and we only learn from our failures, leaving aside our
mistakes. The existence of angels cannot be proved. But what if the
proofs exist outside our rational calculations? In order to discover
them we must free ourselves of our certainties, go beyond sure and
experimented things. Obviously without losing our way and chasing
after dreams.
Along the road we will be led by certain signs, the very ones that the
innocent simple minds or artists follow. Sudden motiveless pleasure
might be enough to show that we are following the right path. This
happens when suddenly things seem different and when, in the place
of a chilly universe dominated by blind laws and immense forces, we
unexpectedly see beauty, warmth, comfort, and dreams like the echo
of distant music. Dark thoughts give way to gusts of laughter.
As soon as we taste such things they disappear. But think about
it: when you were asleep an angel guarded you: you were not
completely alone.
