A NEW PHILOSOPHY FROM THE LIBERTY
MOVEMENT OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Decò design originated
early
in
the
20th
century
and
gained
popularity thanks to an
exhibition held in Paris
in
1925:
“Exposition
internationale
des
arts
décoratifs
et
industriels”.
It
was a very eclectic
movement in the art world, also known as Liberty,
and it drew inspiration from a number of sectors:
Rococò, Imperial, ancient Greek pottery, natural
motifs, Cubism, the colors of Fauvism, sets from the
Russian ballet... To all these influences, the Liberty
Movement added its own extensive use of materials
like inlaid wood, stainless steel, lacquer and
sharkskin. It was a synthetic style but one of great
attention and originality in the rendering of the
volumes, which where particularly aerodynamic.
The maximum exponents of this movement were
designers and advertisers: George Barbier and
Cassandre in particular.
