With the meticulous tailoring and layered comfort that define Baker, Michael S Smith views
upholstery as a stable design element. these are immediate classics, timeless english forms,
always at the ready, steeped but never stopped in history. the Mayfair is a sculpture worthy of
any room. the Dublin is the big, works-anywhere-with-anything english sofa. the Dark harbor
chair — with a nesting ottoman seeking a place to port — recalls the cleverness of 19th-century
english furniture.
occasional furniture adds interest or dimension to a room. each cocktail table offers bold form,
color and texture—without compromising any purpose it might serve. other tables speak to
a more international vocabulary. the neoclassical voltaire adds not only color but an almost
modern graphic element. conversely, the provincial Shaw relies on just the hint of something
Japanese, the pore of the wood and two distinct finishes.
