The 5th Duke has eighteen Lordly titles following his name, including a French
Dukedom, each one telling of the family’s historic achievements of the past. As
a young man the Duke was a Grenadier Guards Officer and then a Member
of Parliament, and later High Sheriff of his country. Now Lord Lieutenant of
Northern Ireland, he ceaselessly endeavors to help industry and prosperity in his
country. He was a Member of the Council of Europe and of the European and
Economic Social Committee, and remains a member of the Northern Ireland
Industrial Committee. Barons Court, the principal residence, stands pillared and
Palladian above the formal gardens, forested lands and lakes of their great estate.
The country house appearance of the exterior belies the scope of the interiors;
One great gallery alone, in the grand Adam style, extends to ninety feet.
