Laguna Faro Suites Grado, Italy
EN Grado, a small island village set just off Italy’s
easternmost coastline, is a picturesque fishing town known
for its quaint houses and sunny climate. In the 20th century,
spurred on by its proximity to central Europe and what many
believe to be its healing mineral waters, the town gained
a reputation as being a wellness destination.
The Laguna Faro Suites, a boutique hotel overlooking
the town’s marina, was designed by Studio Urquiola. In
designing the hotel, she says the adjacent lagoon’s natural
beauty inspired her. “genius loci is a key element in our
projects”, Urquiola explains. “Hence the patterns used in the
hall and in the common areas, which refer to the shadows
of the sand washed by the waves. In addition to the natural
elements of the place, we also wanted to include in the
project the memory of the gesture of man, who adapted his
habits and technologies to the environment that surrounds him”.
Since Grado is a town devoted to wellness,
that meant the bathrooms had to cater a clientele in search
of a soothing spa-like experience. Fortunately, Urquiola,
a longtime Agape designer, had her own fixtures to choose
from, including the Lariana washbasin, which she used
in the hotel rooms. However, for the bathtub, she chose
the luxurious Benedini Associati-designed freestanding
In-Out tub, which she carefully oriented to benefit from
the stunning view of the harbor beyond.

IT Grado è un piccolo e pittoresco villaggio di pescatori
su un’isola a poca distanza dalla costa italiana orientale,
famoso per le sue case caratteristiche e per il clima
soleggiato. Nel corso del XX secolo, grazie alla sua
posizione vicina all’Europa centrale e alle sue acque
minerali a cui molti attribuiscono virtù terapeutiche,
Grado è diventato una rinomata meta del benessere.
Il boutique hotel Laguna Faro Suites, affacciato sul
porticciolo del villaggio, è stato progettato dallo Studio
Urquiola. “Ho tratto ispirazione dalla vicina laguna. Il genius
loci è un elemento chiave nei nostri progetti”, spiega
l’architetta di origine spagnola. “I pattern che abbiamo
creato per la hall e gli spazi comuni richiamano i giochi
d’ombra della sabbia lambita dalle onde. Oltre agli elementi
naturali tipici del luogo, abbiamo evocato i gesti dell’uomo,
che nel tempo ha plasmato abitudini e tecniche in relazione
all’ambiente”.
In una località votata al benessere come Grado,
le stanze da bagno dell’hotel offrono un’esperienza
rilassante come quella di una spa. Urquiola collabora
da tempo con Agape e per le camere ha scelto il lavabo
Lariana, disegnato da lei stessa. Per la vasca da bagno
invece la designer ha optato per In-Out freestanding,
progettata da Benedini Associati per Agape, posizionandola
in modo da poter ammirare la splendida vista sul porto.
