Designed by \nNisse and Kajsa Strinning, the String shelf won its first design \nprize in 1949. Based on three simple elements – the shelf, \nthe wall panel and the metal fitting – it can be combined \nin an infinite number of configurations and is endlessly \nreinvented as it passes from one generation to the next. \nThis year, String celebrates its 75th birthday. \nALL BOOKS AND NO SHELVES\nIn the late 1940s, vast number of books were being sold in \nSweden. Even the smallest town had its own bookshop, \nand salesmen often peddled their wares in the workplace. \nWith Swedish homes overflowing with books, the question \nnaturally arose: where should they all be kept? Bonniers \nFolkbibliotek, one of Sweden’s largest publishers, decided \nto answer this question by holding a design competition in the \nspring of 1949. They called for a new kind of bookcase that \nwould be affordable, wall-mounted, expandable and hold at \nleast two metres of books.\nNISSE STRINNING\nAt this time, a young Stockholm architect called Nisse Strinning \nhad just begun his career. Although a trained architect, \nNisse was actually more interested in designing smaller everyday \nobjects that could have a big impact on people’s lives. \nAs a child, he had designed and built his own bookcase. \nAs an adult, he had all the theoretical knowledge and practical \nexperience needed to recreate that bookcase… making it \nopen, affordable, space-saving, and expandable to any size. \nIn fact, when Nisse heard about Bonniers’ bookcase competition, \nthe idea of the String bookshelf was almost ready to go. \nKAJSA CRACKS THE DETAILS\n \nAt this point, it would be remiss not to mention Strinning’s \nwife Kajsa – also an architect – without whom the String shelf \nmight never have past the prototype stage. Unlike her husband, \nKajsa had the artistic talent to refine Nisse's raw industrial \ndesigns, and the patience to create the detailed technical \nThe original drawing.\n",4,{"image":30,"text":31,"number":32},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002F7f\u002Fc22dc5a39ae8a0d81d3c90c4f5f111-29088f7bd7.5.png","8 \n 9 \nNisse Strinning. Architect and inventor.\ndrawings needed to construct his bookshelf. Together, they \nformed a winning team.\nCHILDREN OF THEIR TIME\nLike most inventors, the Strinnings did not work in a vacuum \nbut were influenced and carried forward by the powerful \ncurrents of their time. The post WW2 era was characterised \nby a strong sense of optimism. Everything seemed possible. \nPenicillin revolutionised the treatment of bacterial infections. \nPlastics revolutionised everyday life. The LP record and the \ntransistor radio were invented. Fiat, Volkswagen, Volvo \nand SAAB launched small, inexpensive vehicles that meant \nordinary people could realise the dream of owning a car. \nIn Paris, Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ triggered a fashion \nrevolution The world of furniture also saw an explosion of \nground-breaking designs. For example, the American couple \nCharles and Ray Eames announced their ambition to \"offer \nthe best of the best at the lowest price to as many people as \npossible\". They designed the iconic fibreglass chair with ‘Eiffel’ \nmetal base – an idea which Harry Bertoia then took to the \nextreme with his Diamond Wire Armchair.\nMAKING GOOD DESIGN AFFORDABLE\nWhen it came to improving the daily lives of its people, Sweden \nwas ahead of the curve. The clothing company, H&M was \nfounded in 1947 and, in the same year, the department store \nNK opened its first home interiors department, showcasing the \nnew design aesthetic that young people loved. A wealth of new, \nmass-produced products appeared, reflecting contemporary \nideals; affordable everyday objects that added elegance to the \nhomes of the new, forward-thinking generation.\nSTRING WINS THE CONTEST\nIn the autumn 1949, Nisse and Kajsa’s String shelf won first \nplace in Bonniers’ bookcase competition. Made of blue wall \npanels and pine shelves, their design beat 194 entries from \naround Europe, the US and even as far away as Australia. \nCommercial production began soon afterwards, with only one \nsmall modification. The dimensions were adjusted to ensure \nthat the wall panels and shelves could be packaged and sold \nin the same box. \nAN INGENIOUS CONSTRUCTION TURNS INTO SUCCESS\nThe construction of the very first shelf was based on three \nsimple elements; the shelf, the wall panel and the metal fitting. \nThe dimensions of the shelves and wall panels were 78 cm wide, \n75 cm high and 20 cm deep – exactly the same as they are \n",5,{"image":34,"text":35,"number":36},"\u002Fmedia\u002Fimages\u002F7f\u002Fc22dc5a39ae8a0d81d3c90c4f5f111-29088f7bd7.6.png","10 \n 11 \nString quickly found its way into offices, even the UN building in New York.\nNisse Strinning was constantly working on new ideas for the String System. With the money, Nisse buys ”A typerwriter and a car”. \nHe chooses an Olivetti typewriter and a Standard Vanguard car. \nINTERNATIONAL SUCCESS\nIn the years that followed, the String shelf began to appear in \ninterior design magazines, at trade fairs and other important \nexhibitions. It continued to sell well in Sweden, while its \npopularity spread to the rest of Europe, the United States and \nSouth America. String shelves were used in the offices of the \nUN Headquarters in New York, and in 1954, String was awarded \na gold medal at the Milan Trienniale. In the summer of 1955, \nan Art Industry Exhibition known as the H55, was held in Sweden, \nwith nine nations participating: Denmark, Finland, France, Japan, \nNorway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and West Germany. \nThe Strinnings took the opportunity to present several additions \nto their range as part of the ‘Home and Interior Design of the \nFuture’ exhibition. These limited-edition tables, chairs and sofas \nsoon became sought-after collector's items.\nTHE GREATEST FORM OF FLATTERY\nAs was the case with many other 1950’s designs, String had \nneither patent nor copyright protection, and numerous \ncopycat products were launched in the wake of its success. \nBy the time the design was finally legally protected in 1961, \nNisse’s lawyer had collected over a hundred more-or-less \naccurately plagiarised designs from around the world. \nAs they say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.\nFROM DURABLE TO DISPOSABLE\nBy the early 1970s, enthusiasm for String was dying down. \nModernism gave way to postmodernism. Simplicity, straight lines \nand open spaces, gave way to rounder shapes, brighter colours \nand lower prices. Consumers were attracted to modern disposable \nproducts, which were a far cry from the durable String System \nthat could be passed down from generation to generation and \nused for every room in the house. Sales declined and the shelves \nthat had once ‘modernised’ the living room were sidelined into \nthe kid’s bedrooms or garage storage. \nMODERNISM MAKES A COMEBACK\nIn the early 1980s, Modernism began to make a comeback. \nFurniture enthusiasts and auction houses noticed that interest \nin the bentwood of Alvar Aalto had picked up. Some wondered \nhow such a well-known, everyday product could be classified \nas a design classic. But Bukowskis’ intuition proved right. \nIt soon became clear that String had reached iconic status \namong design collectors and the designer couple were now seen \nin a new light. \nOPPORTUNITY KNOCKS\nFast forward to November 2004, when Ulrika and Peter Erlandsson \nopened a small design shop in southern Sweden. A customer \ncame in asking if anyone knew of the “String shelf”, and if so, \nhow she could get hold of one. Although the owners had no idea \nof the answer, they found the question intriguing. Peter did some \nresearch and was surprised to learn that production of String \nhad stopped and the manufacturer had been declared bankrupt. \nOn a whim, Peter contacted the bankruptcy administrator to \nfind out if and when manufacturing could start again. He found \nhimself asking if it was possible to take over the rights to String \nproduction. The administrator referred him to Nisse Strinning. \nBefore going any further, Peter called his partner Pär Josefsson, \nand the two of them agreed to pursue the opportunity together. \nA couple of weeks later, Peter and Pär visited the Strinning's \nhome. Peter remembers that the house was visible from a distance, \nwith its garden full of artworks. Nisse lived upstairs with his \nsketches and prototypes while Kajsa lived on the ground floor \nwith her drawings. But that day, the couple was waiting together \nin the kitchen with a huge freshly baked cake which spelt out \nthe word S-T-R-I-N-G.\n‘THE BOYS’ TAKE OVER\nIn 2004, Peter and Pär – whom Kajsa and Nisse endearingly \nreferred to as ‘the boys' – bought the rights to manufacture, \ndistribute and sell String worldwide. All four shook hands \non the deal and a brand new chapter of String Furniture began. \nThe following year the new range in a contemporary all white \nversion, was presented at H05 in Helsingborg – the very same \nplace where the original design had received so much attention \nfifty years earlier. The familiar shape of the String system felt at \nonce both classic and modern. \nTHE LEGACY LIVES ON\nToday, String comprises of an entire system and can be combined \nin an infinite number of configurations.
