We have been around long enough \nto call ourselves Scandinavia’s oldest producer of \nrattan and wicker furniture. \nThe story of our company begins in 1942, when \nAnkjær Andreasen produced the first batch of bas-\nkets, lamps, flower tables and other smaller interi-\nor items made of rush and willow. In the 1950´s, \nAnkjær expanded his production to include a fur-\nniture series  made from rattan, and the company \nSika-Design was firmly established. \nThe rattan was imported from the Far East, and \nAnkjær traveled there to purchase the rattan for \nhis wicker makers in Denmark. During a trip in \n1972, he was so impressed by the skilled wicker \nweavers that he decided to establish a wicker fur-\nniture factory in Malaysia. Since then, the Far East \nhas been essential to our furniture production. To-\nday, we manufacture our furniture in our own fac-\ntory in Indonesia. Ankjær‘s son, Knud Andreasen, \ntook over the company in 1983, however Ankjær \ncontinued his daily “inspections” until his death in \n1997. On my 10th birthday, my father allowed me \nto attend a fair where Sika-Design was exhibiting a \nseries of rattan furniture. \nOn that day, I knew I wanted to be a part of his \ncompany, and my passion for rattan furniture be-\ngan. Since 1996, my father and I have worked side \nby side bringing Sika-Design into the new centu-\nry with great design, while never letting go of our \nstrong heritage of great craftsmanship.\nProducts from Sika Design are developed and mar-\nketed in accordance with our management system \nfor environmental and social responsibility ISO \n14001\u002F2004 and SA8000\u002F2008. The vines have been known to grow \nup to hundreds of metres long. Rattan grows natu-\nrally without disturbing the existing structure and \nbalance in the rainforest while at the same time \ncleaning the air by transforming CO2 into clean \nair.\nAs rattan grows by climbing the trees in the rain-\nforest, it is important to preserve the trees in order \nto preserve the rattan production. This means that \nrattan indirectly helps to preserve the rainforest in \nIndonesia. It is the fastest growing tropical wood \nand it regenerates in 5-7 years. \nRATTAN IS IMPOSSIBLE TO WEAR OUT\nRattan can handle both high and low temperatures \nas well as humidity and fluctuations in tempera-\nture. Rattan does not need any special attention. \nFor daily cleaning it can be wiped with a cloth or \nbrush. \nThere is a common misconception that rattan fur-\nniture is made of bamboo, however there is big dif-\nference between rattan and bamboo although they \nlook similar on the surface. Rattan stems are sol-\nid whereas bamboo stems are hollow. The design \nof the “Hanging Egg Chair” has long since been \ndubbed timeless, whereas rattan had its golden \nage in the 1960’s when skilled wicker weavers and \narchitects crafted beautifully sculptured furniture \nout of the challenging material.\n \nThe Danish designers Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel \nexhibited their first furniture designs in Copenha-\ngen, when they were still students at the Industrial \nArts and Crafts College, Copenhagen.\nDitzel’s experimental approach to materials resul- \nted in the 3-legged rattan chair, which is designed \non the basis of the body. He first hoped to become a paint-\ner, but Jacobsen was admitted to the Architecture \nSchool at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts \nfrom 1924 to 1927. He studied under Kay Fisker \nand Kaj Gottlob, both leading architects and de-\nsigners.\n \nAs early as 1925 the talented architect student was \nawarded an impressive silver medal for the Paris \nChair™, which was his very first piece of furniture \nat the world exhibition in Paris.\nOn that trip, he was struck by the pioneering aes-\nthetic of Le Corbusier’s L’Esprit Nouveau pavilion. \nHe also became acquainted with the rationalist ar-\nchitecture of Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropi-\nus. Furni-\nture should have an organic flow and embrace the \nbody smoothly and tenderly. It should be a delight \nto the eye, but also be solid and durable.\n \nViggo Boesen designed a number of pieces of \nmodernist profiled wicker furniture, which were \nbased on the strength and durability of rattan.\n \nViggo Boesen’s FOX lounge chair won the design \ncompetition, that the Danish wicker-maker guild \nheld in 1936. His inspiring, imaginative designs \nmade him unique, and put him among the design-\ners of the “Danish golden age”.\n \nSika-Design is proud to be the first to bring a Viggo \nBoesen design back into the market.
