The entire tree is utilized; the \nmidsection of the trunks for firewood and branches for walking sticks.\nExtraordinary in every way, from its highly-figured grain to the story of \nhow it comes to be. Burl is nature’s most beautiful form of protection. \nWhen a tree experiences an unusual stress, the burl is its decades-\nlong response. A burl is the hardest part of a tree. Its rarest and most \nbeautiful aspect. It is often used in veneers for fine furniture, luxury car \ninterior trims or high-end instruments. We seek out the most unusual \nforms and slice them into solid, generous slabs.\nLychee Wood is a hardy wood that is very heavy and dense with a deep \nreddish color. Originally found in Southern China, the popularity of the \nfruit these trees bear has resulted in it becoming a prevalent species \nacross Southeast Asia and beyond. In creating this collection, great \ncare was taken to unearth these root systems which were compacted \nwith stone and dirt and remove the sediment so they could be sliced \ninto sculptural furnishings\nTeak is the most durable and weather-proof of all hardwoods and \nis one of the world’s most valuable timbers. It has been historically \nrecognized for its robustness and firmness, and has a beauty and \nrichness that is unrivaled. Teak has an exceptionally pronounced grain \nthat is best accented by a simple clear coat finish. The natural oils the \nwood produces allows it to be used outdoors year-round, where it \ndevelops a beautiful silver-grey patina.\nMango wood is a medium-density wood that comes in a variety of \ncolors, ranging from light to dark brown, with some pieces even \nhaving a hint of pink. Mango wood is inherently sustainable, being one \nof the fastest-growing woods in the world. The base of the Makha \ntree is especially valued due to the massive burls that grow in the root \nsystem.\nMai Theng wood, also known as Balau, is a hardwood that is denser \nthan teak and with the reddish coloring of mahogany. Each piece is deluxed before it \nleaves the facility through fine sanding, sealing, spraying and curing. \nOur natural finish is a celebration of the grain of the wood in its \noriginal form.\nWeather worn woods left out in the sun and rain for months at a time \ntake on a wonderfully-aged patina. By cerusing the wood and applying \na multi-step finish, we achieve a stone-like effect which preserves the \nrough texture and rich color of the wood.\nThe word Uber is defined as a great example of something, and what \ncould be more appropriate when describing this finish. By applying a \nmulti-step, high-gloss finish, our Chamcha wood takes on a brilliance \nyou simply have to see to believe.\nOur bleached finish is our longest and most involved process. It is \nachieved by using special solvents that cause the heavy oils deep \nwithin the wood to come to the surface and be wiped away. The piece \nmust then be washed, solvents reapplied and then be exposed to the \nsun for weeks. This entire process is repeated as many as four times as \nneeded.\nWe struggled for years to find the right brown, and it was only during \na recent, unfortunate fire in one of our kilns that we discovered the \nperfect brown. In an attempt to salvage a large dining slab, we scraped \noff the charred top layers to reveal the unharmed core. We sealed, \nstained and finished the piece and realized we created a stunning \nfinish. We aptly call it “Perfect Brown”.\nOur espresso finish is achieved by using our proprietary dark stain. \nThis special treatment brings out a depth to the wood grain without \ncompromising the original luster. A satin clear coat pairs beautifully \nwith the smooth surface of the wood, giving the piece a luxurious and \norganic feel.\nThis ebonized finish is achieved by charring the surface of the tables \nwith a blowtorch, then sealing the piece with a multi-step finish. The \nsatin clear coat is durable yet understated.
