With a desire to create a grandfather \nclock for many years, the celebration of Broom’s \ndecade of design was a timely and natural choice \nto release the new design. The clock is a limited \nedition piece with only ten being produced in \ncelebration of the past ten years, one for each \nyear. \n“I’ve always wanted to design a grandfather \nclock. My grandparents had one in their \nhome when I was growing up and I was always \nfascinated by its majestic appearance and \nits intricate mechanisms. Given our decade \nin design, it felt like the right moment to \ndesign one. Clocks are synonymous with the \ncommemoration of a significant passage of time \nand that sentiment seemed very timely for our \n10th anniversary year. It’s a material \nwe have used previously in the past ten \nyears and a material we have become \nvery known for so it felt right to revisit \nit. The natural veining of the Carrara \nwas also important to the design and I \nwanted to use this to create some softness \nto the angular silhouette. The piece has a \ntraditional grandfather clock time piece \nmechanism which would usually have \ntwo weights. We modified and adapted \nthe mechanism in our .............\n \n...............factory in Bow,  East \nLondon, to work with just one central \nweight which mirrors the contours of the \ninner clock chamber. The weight, hands \nand pendulum are all handmade from \npolished solid brass and the spherical \nshape of the pendulum is juxtaposed with \nthe triangular prism of the weight. For \nthe brassware I wanted to include themes \nI’ve explored in recent collections around \nbalance, form and pivots and the brass is \nagain a material I have worked with on \ncollections over the past ten years. When he founded \nthe company in 2007 Broom set out with a clear vision to be not just a designer but an \nentrepreneur; designing, manufacturing and retailing under the Lee Broom label. Alongside \nhis own collections which include over 100 furinture, accessory and lighting designs which \nhe presents bi-annually in what have become highly anticipated exhibitions, Broom has \nalso designed products and interiors for other leading global brands including Christian \nLouboutin and Mulberry alongside designing over 45 commercial retail, restaurant and \nbar interiors. Most recently Broom has partnered with British heritage brand Wedgwood \nto create a prestige capsule collection of collectable Jasperware.\nBroom has a background in theatre and was a child actor from the age of 7 years \nold. He perfomed in many TV shows, theatrical productions and was also a \nDesigner of the Year Award  in 1993 judged by Vivienne Westwood. Following an internship in Westwood’s \nLondon studio which involved also working in Paris during Fashion Week, Broom went on to study a BA in \nFashion Design Womenswear at Central Saint Martins. During his time as a student, to help support himself, \nBroom set up a small business providing décor advice for a number of independent bars and nightclubs across \nLondon which cemented an organic move into interiors. \nJust after graduation in 2000 Broom was commissioned along with his friend and colleague from Central St \nMartins, Maki Aoki, to work on a 9-month long project for the design of what was to become London bar \n‘Nylon’. After the project was nominated for the Evening Standard Bar of the Year Award, Broom and Aoki set \nup a successful interior design practice.\nMakilee Design, created interiors for independent bars, clubs and restaurants across London for the \nnext four years. Broom always had plans to launch his own label focusing on furniture and lighting and \nafter Aoki moved back to her native Japan, Broom launched the brand under his own name. In 2007 \nthe eponymous Lee Broom brand was established and his debut range of limited edition furniture and \nlighting; ‘Neo Neon’ was launched during The London Design Festival, firmly established his name in \nthe industry as the one to watch.\nmember of The Royal Shakespeare Company. \nHe also had a talent for design, particularly \nfashion, and at the age of 17 his career path took \na change of diection when he won The Young\nSince then Broom has launched two \nnew collections each year during Milan \nDesign Week and The London Design \nFestival, which sell globally. Presented during Milan Design Week 2015, Broom \ntook over a street of disused shops on Via Alfredo Cappellini and in his trademark style took \nvisitors on an immersive journey through a cinematic pastiche of a Lee Broom department \nstore set across two floors which included a Perfumery, Ladies accessories, Gents fitting room \nand Haberdashery providing a unique backdrop to his designs. Broom’s 2016 exhibition \n‘Salone Del Automobile’ presented at Milan Design Week saw the Lee Broom liveried delivery \nvan, driven from London to Italy and pitch up at design districts across the city. In stark \ncontrast to the industrial exterior, the interior of the van decorated as a surreal faux Italian \npalazzo showcased Broom’s latest lighting collection.
