Richard Neutra himself referred to \nthem in various texts, as:\n“Traditional Japanese architecture is horizontal; \nspace is exclusively horizontal. Without a defined \ncentre or axis, it extends as an aggregate of rooms \nof equal value, none of which is complete except \nin relation to the others. The space is flexible and \ntransferable, without a fixed function. The use of \nthe rooms varies over the course of the day and \nthroughout the year.”\n2 \nThe columns are set back 100 mm to give full \nprominence to the roof. In addition, the columns are \nunderstated and the roof is slightly oversized. In spite \nof its formal strength, to some extent it seems as if the \nroof is floating lightly over the shell of the house.\n3 \nThe characteristic chimney on the roof has been \nmaintained, which houses the light sensors, air-\nconditioning unit and a small weather station. The \ntechnology used by the architect in this project is \nstill quite astonishing even today, evidenced by the \ncomplex electrical installation, the special lighting \nsystems, the telephone installation, the projectors, the \nelectric stoves, the radio, the signage system and the \ntemperature control device. This house is a \nparticularly important example of Richard Neutra’s \nwork because it encapsulates all the architectural \ntheories that he first posited in his book Wie Baut \namerika?, 1927 and later on in his more philosophical \nreflections Survival Through Design, 1953.\nSeven years later, when the family had grown, he \nbuilt an annex in the garden. In 1963, the house was \ndevastated by fire, leaving only the annex standing. At \nthat time, Richard Neutra and his son and colleague \nDion Neutra rebuilt the house and added a solarium\u002F\natrium on top of the original structure. He incorporated \neverything he had learned over the years in this \nreconstruction: modularity, natural climate control, \nwater roofs, interaction with the natural environment, \ntechnological advances, etc.\nApart from being his home, the VDL Research House \nwas also his office. In this building, over 30 years, he \ndesigned hundreds of international projects. Some of \nthe most representative architects from the Modern \nAmerican movement also spent time in his practice as \napprentices.
