A table should be possessed, \nand understood.\nYou brought back charburning as a surface \ntreatment, perfected it, and made it \ndesirable for high-class interiors. What \nwas the greatest challenge involved in this?\nAs it’s impossible to truly control fire, \nit was always exciting to see what the flames \ndecided to do – as well as to see how wood \nreacts when it comes into contact with fire. \nFinding the right amount of fire was a  \nchallenging process, as our goal was initiat- \ning a metamorphosis as opposed to causing \ndestruction.\nNowadays you don’t just charburn the \nsurfaces of the table, you also wash them. \nIs water less destructive than fire?\nAs different as fire and water are, they \nhave one thing in common: Their reaction \nis hard to predict – perhaps with water \neven more so than with fire. As every tree \ngrows in a different spot and takes on  \ndifferent nutrients from the soil, it’s  \nimpossible to predict the exact shade that \nthe wood will take on after washing.  \nGiven these variations, creating a coherent \ncollection is not easy. \nFire is used for charburning, water for \nwashing. According to the principle of the \nfour elements, that leaves earth and air... \nI harness the shine of precious stone \nfor Janua’s new gold surface finish – in a  \nsense adding the element of earth to the  \ncollection. And when we smoke the wood, \nits tannic acid reacts with ammonium  \nchloride or ammonia. Welche \nBedeutung hat der Tisch für Sie?\nEr bildet das Zentrum einer Familie. \nDort wird gemeinsam gegessen, geredet \nund gefeiert. Tischen haftet aber auch  \netwas Heiliges an. Sie wurden als Altäre  \ngebaut, worauf etwas dargeboten wird.  \nMir gefällt diese Symbolik, denn es macht \nmir Freude, meinen Gästen etwas anzubie-\nten. Zudem: Ein Tisch bringt eine oft mehr-\nhundertjährige Baumbiografie mit, die die \nMenschen fortschreiben, die ihn benutzen. \nEin Tisch gehört besessen. Und begriffen.\nSie haben das Köhlen als Oberflächenver-\nedelung aus der Mottenkiste geholt, zur \nPerfektion gebracht – und salonfähig ge-\nmacht. Was war dabei Ihre größte  \nHerausforderung?  \nDa sich Feuer nicht wirklich beherr-\nschen lässt, war es spannend zu beobach-\nten, was das Feuer von sich aus tut.  \nUnd was das Holz macht, wenn es mit \nFeuer in Berührung kommt. Die richtige \nDosierung des Feuers war ein herausfor-\ndernder Prozess: Es sollte eine Metamor-\nphose stattfinden, aber keine Zerstörung.\nMittlerweile köhlen Sie die Oberflächen \nder Tische nicht nur, Sie waschen sie auch. \nIst Wasser weniger zerstörerisch als Feuer?\nSo unterschiedlich Feuer und Wasser \nauch sind, eines haben sie doch gemein: \nIhre Reaktion ist schwer absehbar – die von \nWasser sogar noch schwerer als die von \nFeuer. Weil jeder Baum an einem anderen \nPlatz gewachsen ist und unterschiedliche \nNährstoffe vom Boden aufgenommen hat, \nlässt sich nicht vorhersagen, in welchem \nFarbton sich sein Holz nach dem Waschen \npräsentiert. Aus der Unterschiedlichkeit \ndann eine einheitliche Kollektion zusam-\nmenzustellen, ist nicht leicht.\nBeim Köhlen kommt Feuer zum Einsatz, \nbeim Waschen Wasser. Fehlen nach der \nVier-Elemente-Lehre noch Erde und Luft...\nFür die neue Gold-Oberfläche für  \nJanua arbeite ich Gesteinsglimmer mit ein – \nim weitesten Sinne also Erde. Und bei der \nTechnik des Räucherns reagiert die Gerb-\nsäure des Holzes mit Salmiak oder Ammo-\nniak. How do you successfully \ntransfer the energy and innate power of \nthe natural world into your furniture? \nThis ability likely comes from my  \ncuriosity and the fascination that the natural \nworld has always had for me. I discovered \nstories in wood from an early age – I remem-\nber looking up at the wooden ceiling at my \ngrandparents’ house. I could see faces, eyes \nand figures looking back at me in the grain. \nAs the actual substance as well as the  \nhidden aspects of wood still fascinate me to \nthis day, I tell its story through my tables. \nYou specialise in tables. What does the \ntable mean for you?\nThe table forms the centre of family \nlife. It’s where we eat, talk and celebrate  \ntogether. There’s something sacred about \ntables. Some were built as altars for making \nofferings to a higher power. I like this  \nsymbolism, as I enjoy nothing more than \noffering nice things to guests on my table-\ntop. Die Auswahl des  \nrichtigen Materials setzt dabei den Auftakt zu einer \nProzesskette mit mehreren Gliedern: Zunächst wird \nmit dem Hobel Hand an den Rohling gelegt, im  \nAnschluss kommt die Kettensäge zum Einsatz.  \nSie verleiht der planen Fläche eine markante Struktur. \nDanach absolviert das Brett einen Feuerlauf:  \nDie Oberfläche des Holzes wird so lange mit dem  \nBunsenbrenner bearbeitet, bis die oberste Schicht  \nverkohlt ist. Durch das Verbrennen und nachfolgende  \nBürsten bleiben die harten Holzteile stehen, die  \nweichen werden abgetragen. Astlöcher, Risse und die \nSpuren der Kettensäge fließen sanft ineinander über \nund hinterlassen eine charaktervoll hervorgehobene \nHolzstruktur. Abschließend mit unterschiedlichen  \nVerfahren veredelt und mit Naturharzöl versiegelt,  \nentstehen harte, widerstandsfähige Oberflächen in ver-\nschiedenen Farbtönen und mit spannender Haptik. ——\nAt first glance, the charburning process appears to  \nbe a rather brutal assault on the surface of the wood. \nSelecting the right material is the starting point for  \na process chain with several links: the first step is \nundertaken with a carpenter’s plane, before the \nchainsaw is then applied. This gives the surface of \nthe wood a truly distinctive structure.  \nThe wood is then subjected to a baptism of fire –  \nthe surface is torched with the Bunsen burner until \nthe top layer is charred. This process of burning and \nthen brushing allows the hard parts of the wood to \nremain, while the softer parts are removed.  \nCracks, knotholes and marks from the chainsaw \nblend smoothly together to create a tabletop struc-\nture brimming with character.
