In this process of updating and \nrepositioning the company, I was contacted with a direct brief: \nto work on a modular seating system for public spaces and of-\nfices.\tA\tmulti-voiced\tdialogue\tbegan\tbetween\tme,\tthe\tArt\tDi-\nrectors and the company, even before starting to work on the \nfirst\tideas.\tFirst,\twe\ttried\tto\talign\tourselves\ton\ta\tcommon\tap-\nproach to the project, trying to establish a relationship that \ncould then be the basis of any subsequent work. At that point, \nworking on the proposed concepts and subsequent advances \nwas something natural and relatively quick, until we got to the \nfirst\tprototypes\tin\twhich\tthe\tidea,\tuntil\tthen\tdiscussed\ton\tpaper,\t\nwas\tverified\ttogether\tin\treal\tlife.\tThere\twas\ta\tfrank\tand\tsincere\t\napproach\tto\tthe\tproject,\tin\twhich\tthe\tmany\tvoices\tin\tthe\tfield\t\nmanaged\tto\tfind\ta\tcommon\tconclusion.\tThis\tis\twhat\thappens\t\nin companies that implement, in an intelligent and healthy way, \ncollaborations with external professionals, knowing that they \nare\tmutual\tresources\tfor\teach\tother,\tand\tthat\ta\tgood\tfinal\tre-\nsult is given by comparisons rather than impositions.\nCAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT AND THE \nSTORY BEHIND ITS CREATION?\nTC \nFrom the very beginning, the aim was to insert charac-\nterising elements into the design of the object, trying to match \nthe aesthetic characterisation of the system with a general \nsystemic\tefficiency,\tnot\tonly\tin\tterms\tof\tproduction\tbut\talso\tin\t\nterms\tof\tfinishing,\tstorage\tand\tassembly.\tWe\ttried\tto\tachieve\t\nthe greatest possible customisation with the smallest possi-\nble number of elements. The idea of  having a “beam”, not only \naesthetic but also functional, as the backbone of the system \nwas the conceptual starting point of Modus. In fact, everything \nelse develops from the central beam, from the support feet of \nthe seats, to the accessories, from the small complements, to \nthe armrests and backrests. Modus is an “open” system; some-\nthing\tthat\tcan\tnot\tonly\ttake\ton\tdifferent\tconfigurations\tde-\npending\ton\tthe\tspecific\tproject,\tbut\tthat\tcan\tgrow\tover\ttime,\t\nfollowing the evolution of the company, implementing the el-\nements from time to time, responding to the market and the \nevolution of public and workspaces.\nWHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FUTURE OF \nWORKING SPACES? ARE THEY EVOLVING, AND HOW \nSIGNIFICANT IS DESIGN IN SHAPING THESE ENVIRON-\nMENTS?\nTC \nThe topic of workspaces is very complex and constantly \nevolving; we have gone from a Cartesian and cubical setting \nof individual workstations to organic open spaces, without any \nhierarchization and differentiation. We have come to under-\nstand that neither of the two extremes works, and now we are \ntrying to hybridize the various approaches by modulating the \npublic and the private, the organic and the rational. The pan-\ndemic then gave a further jolt by accelerating and sometimes \noverturning all the reasonings on the necessity and meaning \nof physical presence in the place of study and work. Design, \nas a receiver and re-elaborator of contemporaneity, has the \ntask of entering this debate by giving shape and substance to \nnew behaviours by supporting, implementing and trying to pro-\npose new readings and new scenarios starting from the fur-\nrow of the ongoing discussion. Design has always given shape \nand substance to imagined scenarios and where the debate is \ndenser and more complex, it has more freedom of movement \nand proactive impetus.\nSPEAKING OF THE MODUS SYSTEM, WHAT MAKES IT \nUNIQUE AND SETS IT APART?\nTC \nThe possibility of customization, despite the low number \nof elements, is the strong point of Modus. There is also anoth-\ner\taspect\tthat\tmakes\tme\tvery\thappy\twith\tthe\tfinal\tresult\tof\tthe\t\nproject and it is something that we have tried to aim for from \nthe beginning. Despite its modularity and versatility, Modus \nremains a piece of furniture with a language far from the cold \nand functionalist one of many modular systems. The intention \nwas\tto\tcreate\ta\tproduct\tthat\twould\tappear\t\"finished\"\tin\teach\t\nof\tits\tconfigurations,\tavoiding\tit\talways\tlooking\tlike\tsomething\t\nincomplete or part of a larger system. For this purpose, some \npre-figured\tconfigurations\tare\tprovided,\tbut\tthe\tsystem\talso\t\nallows the creation of completely customized solutions. Fur-\nthermore, to ensure a truly autonomous design, it is planned \nan integration with a battery, which makes the system com-\npletely independent. \nHOW DOES SUSTAINABILITY INFLUENCE YOUR PRO-\nCESS AND THE PRODUCTS YOU DESIGN?\nTC \nAs a Designer, my approach to sustainability always de-\npends on the customer with whom I develop a project. It is \nsomething that we designers must be able to \"handle\" but that \nmust already be implemented by the companies we come into \ncontact with. In this case, the commitment was to keep all the \nelements separable and disassembled, thus managing to sat-\nisfy\tcustomization,\tdisassembly\tof\tthe\telements,\tmore\tefficient\t\nand less cumbersome storage. When we talk about sustaina-\nbility, we often forget the whole process to simply talk about \nmanufacturing material. A sustainable approach is instead an \napproach that considers all the phases of a product's life, from \nproduction to distribution.\nHOW DO YOU APPROACH BALANCING AESTHETICS \nAND FUNCTIONALITY IN YOUR WORK?\nTC \nThe debate on form and function has been going on since \nthe dawn of this discipline and I believe it has now exhausted \nits\tmeaning.\tWe\thave\tfinally\tunderstood\tthat\ta\tproject\tcannot\t\nignore both concepts and that a good project is at the same \ntime beautiful, well-made and functional. In questo processo di aggiornamento e ripo-\nsizionamento dell’azienda sono stato contatta-\nto con un brief diretto: lavorare su un sistema di \nseduta\tmodulare\tper\tgli\tspazi\tpubblici\te\tgli\tuffi-\nci. È iniziato un dialogo a più voci tra me, gli Art \nDirector e l’azienda, ancora prima di iniziare a \nlavorare sulle prime idee. Abbiamo prima di tut-\nto cercato di allinearci su un approccio comune \nal progetto, cercando di instaurare un rappor-\nto che poi potesse essere alla base di qualsia-\nsi lavoro successivo. A quel punto, lavorare sui \nconcept proposti e sui successivi avanzamenti è \nstato qualcosa di naturale e relativamente rapi-\ndo,\tfino\tad\tarrivare\tai\tprimi\tprototipi\tin\tcui\tl’dea,\t\nfino\ta\tquel\tmomento\tdiscussa\tsulla\tcarta,\tè\tsta-\nta\tverificata\tinsieme\tdal\tvero.\tC’è\tstato\tun\tap-\nproccio schietto e sincero sul progetto, in cui le \nmolte voci in campo sono riuscite a trovare una \nconclusione comune. È quello che succede nelle \naziende che implementano, in modo intelligente e \nsano, le collaborazioni con professionisti esterni, \nsapendo che si è reciprocamente risorse gli uni \nper\tgli\taltri,\te\tche\tun\tbuon\trisultato\tfinale\tè\tdato\t\nda confronti piuttosto che da imposizioni. \nPUOI RACCONTARCI QUALCOSA SUL \nTUO PRODOTTO E LA STORIA DIET-\nRO LA SUA CREAZIONE?\nTC \nDa subito l’intento è stato quello di \ninserire degli elementi caratterizzanti nel de-\nsign dell’oggetto, cercando di far combaciare \nla caratterizzazione estetica del sistema con \nun’efficienza\tsistemica\tgenerale,\tnon\tsolo\tdi\t\nproduzione\tma\tanche\tdi\tfinitura,\tstoccaggio\te\t\nassemblaggio. Si è cercato di raggiungere la \nmaggior personalizzazione possibile con il mi-\nnor numero di elementi possibili. L’idea di avere \nuna “trave” come spina dorsale non solo estet-\nica ma anche funzionale del sistema è stata il \npunto di partenza concettuale di Modus. Dalla \ntrave centrale si sviluppa infatti tutto il resto, dai \npiedi di appoggio e sostegno delle sedute, agli \naccessori, dai piccoli complementi, ai braccioli \ne schienali. Modus è un sistema “aperto”; qual-\ncosa\tche\tpuò\tnon\tsolo\tprendere\tconfigurazio-\nni\tdifferenti\ta\tseconda\tdel\tprogetto\tspecifico,\t\nma che può crescere con il tempo, seguendo \nl’evoluzione dell’azienda, implementando di vol-\nta in volta gli elementi, rispondendo al mercato \ne all’evoluzione degli spazi pubblici e di lavoro. \nCOSA PENSI DEL FUTURO DEGLI \nSPAZI DI LAVORO? SI STANNO EVOL-\nVENDO? E QUANTO È IMPORTANTE IL \nDESIGN NEL DARE FORMA A QUES-\nTI AMBIENTI?\nTC \nQuello degli spazi di lavoro è un tema \ncomplessissimo e in continua evoluzione, siamo \npassati da un’impostazione cartesiana e cubico-\nlare delle singole postazioni di lavoro ad open-\nspace organici, senza alcuna gerarchizzazione \ne differenziazione degli spazi di lavoro. Siamo \narrivati a capire che nessuno dei due estremi \nfunziona e ora si sta cercando di ibridare i vari \napprocci modulando il pubblico e il privato, l’or-\nganico e il razionale. La pandemia poi ha da-\nto un ulteriore scossone accelerando e a volte \nribaltando tutti i ragionamenti sulla necessità \ne\tsul\tsenso\tdella\tpresenza\tfisica\tsul\tluogo\tdi\t\nstudio e lavoro. Il design, in quanto recettore e \nrielaboratore della contemporaneità ha il compi-\nto di inserirsi in questo dibattito dando forma e \nsostanza ai nuovi comportamenti supportando, \nimplementando e provando a proporre nuove \nletture e nuovi scenari a partire dal solco del-\nla discussione in atto. Il Design, da sempre, dà \nforma e sostanza a scenari immaginati e lad-\ndove\til\tdibattito\tè\tpiù\tfitto\te\tcomplesso,\tha\tpiù\t\nlibertà di movimento e slancio propositivo.\nPARLANDO DEL SISTEMA MODUS, \nCOSA LO RENDE UNICO E LO DIS-\nTINGUE DAGLI ALTRI?\nTC \nLa possibilità di personalizzazione, \nnonostante il basso numero di elementi è il \npunto di forza di Modus. C’è inoltre un altro \naspetto che mi rende molto felice del risultato \nfinale\tdel\tprogetto\ted\tè\tqualcosa\ta\tcui\tsi\tè\tcer-\ncato di mirare sin dall’inizio. Nonostante la sua \nmodularità e versatilità, Modus rimane un arre-\ndo con un linguaggio lontano da quello freddo \ne funzionalista di molti sistemi modulari. L’in-\ntenzione era quella di creare un prodotto che \napparisse\t“concluso”\tin\togni\tsua\tconfigurazi-\none, evitando che sembrasse sempre qualco-\nsa di incompleto o una parte di un sistema più \nampio.\tA\ttal\tfine,\tsono\tpreviste\talcune\tconfig-\nurazioni\tgià\tprefigurate,\tma\til\tsistema\tconsente\t\nanche la creazione di soluzioni completamente \npersonalizzate. Inoltre, per garantire un design \nrealmente autonomo, è prevista l'integrazione \ncon una batteria che rende il sistema comple-\ntamente indipendente.\nIN CHE MODO LA SOSTENIBILITÀ IN-\nFLUENZA I TUOI PROCESSI E I PRO-\nDOTTI CHE PROGETTI?\nTC \nCome Designer il mio approccio al-\nla sostenibilità dipende sempre dal cliente con \ncui sviluppo un progetto. È qualcosa che noi de-\nsigner dobbiamo essere in grado di “maneggia-\nre” ma che già deve essere implementato dalle \naziende con cui entriamo in contatto. In questo \ncaso l’impegno è stato quello di mantenere tut-\nti gli elementi separabili e disassemblabili, rius-\ncendo così a soddisfare la personalizzazione, la \ndisassemblabilità degli elementi, uno stoccag-\ngio\tpiù\tefficiente\te\tmeno\tingombrante.\tQuando\t\nsi parla di sostenibilità spesso si dimentica tut-\nto il processo per parlare semplicemente di ma-\nteriale di realizzazione. \nUn approccio sostenibile è invece un approccio \nche considera tutte le fasi di vita di un prodotto, \ndalla produzione alla distribuzione. \nCOME RIESCI A BILANCIARE ES-\nTETICA E FUNZIONALITÀ NEL TUO \nLAVORO?\nTC \nQuello su forma e funzione è un dibat-\ntito che va avanti dall’alba dei tempi di ques-\nta disciplina e che ormai credo abbia esauri-\nto\til\tsuo\tsenso\td’essere.\tAbbiamo\tfinalmente\t\ncapito che un progetto non può prescindere \nda entrambi i concetti e che un buon proget-\nto è allo stesso tempo bello, ben fatto e funzi-\nonale. Considerare solo uno dei due concetti \nda vita a progetti zoppi che durano il tempo di \nuna stagione. Il dialogo tra gli attori in campo \ndi cui parlavo all’inizio, in cui ognuno porta il \nproprio know-how all’interno del processo, è \nciò che dà vita a progetti in cui la componente \nestetica e funzionale sono così amalgamate e \nmetabolizzate che è impossibile separarle ed \nindividuarne\til\tconfine.\nPOTRESTI RACCONTARCI QUALI \nSONO LE SFIDE E LE SODDISFAZIO-\nNI PIÙ GRANDI DEL LAVORARE NEL \nSETTORE DEL DESIGN?\nTC \nPersonalmente faccio questo mestiere \nper un legame viscerale che ho da sempre con \ngli oggetti; perciò, i motivi della soddisfazione \nche provo nel disegnare, vedere realizzato e poi \nusare ciò che progetto possono essere lontani \no non combaciare con il loro successo commer-\nciale.\tLa\tdifficoltà\tpiù\tgrande\tè\tsempre\tquel-\nla di cercare di rimanere obbiettivi sul proprio \nlavoro, dando spazio alle critiche e accoglien-\ndo l’errore come possibilità.\nRACCONTACI QUALCOSA DI INAS-\nPETTATO SU DI TE.\nTC\t\nDurante\tle\tfiere\tin\tcui\tvengono\tpres-\nentati i miei prodotti mi apposto per spiare le \nreazioni delle persone che vedono e usano per \nla prima volta i prodotti che ho disegnato. \nFR\t\nCOMMENT\t A-T-ELLE\t COMMENCÉ\t\nTA COLLABORATION AVEC IBEBI ET \nCOMMENT\tDÉCRIT-TU\tLE\tPARCOURS\t\nACCOMPLI JUSQU’À PRÉSENT?\nTC \nLa rencontre avec IBEBI s’est déroulée \ngrâce à Elena et Michael de Stormo Studio, qui \nsuivent l’entreprise depuis quelques années en \ntant que directeurs artistiques. Dans ce pro-\ncessus de mise à niveau et de repositionne-\nment de l’entreprise, j’ai été contacté avec un \nbrief\tdirect :\ttravailler\tsur\tun\tsystème\td’assises\t\nmodulaires pour les espaces publics et les bu-\nreaux. Un dialogue à plusieurs voix a commencé \nentre moi, les directeurs artistiques et l’entre-\nprise, avant même de commencer à travailler \nsur les premières idées. Nous avons d’abord \nessayé de nous aligner sur une approche com-\nmune du projet, en essayant d’établir une re-\nlation qui pourrait ensuite être la base de tout \ntravail ultérieur. À ce moment-là, travailler sur \nles concepts proposés et les progrès succes-\nsifs a été quelque chose de naturel et relative-\nment rapide, jusqu’à arriver aux premiers pro-\ntotypes où l’idée, jusqu’alors discutée sur le \npapier,\ta\tété\tvérifiée\tensemble\tpar\tla\tréalité.\t\nIl y a eu une approche franche et sincère du \nprojet, où les nombreuses voix sur le terrain \nont réussi à trouver une conclusion commune. \nC’est ce qui se passe dans les entreprises qui \nmettent en œuvre, de manière intelligente et \nsaine, des collaborations avec des profession-\nnels externes, sachant que l’on est mutuelle-\nment ressources pour les autres, et qu’un bon \nrésultat\tfinal\test\tdonné\tpar\tdes\tcomparaisons\t\nplutôt que par des impositions.\nPEUX-TU\tNOUS\tPARLER\tDE\tTON\tPRO-\nDUIT ET DE L’HISTOIRE QUI SE CACHE \nDERRIÈRE SA CRÉATION?\nTC \nDès le début, l’intention était d’insérer \ndes éléments caractéristiques dans la concep-\ntion de l’objet, en essayant de faire correspondre \nla caractérisation esthétique du système avec \nune\tefficacité\tsystémique\tgénérale,\tnon\tseule-\nment\tde\tproduction\tmais\taussi\tde\tfinition,\tstock-\nage et assemblage. Nous avons essayé d’obtenir \nla plus grande personnalisation possible avec \nle moins d’éléments possibles. L’idée d’avoir \nune \"poutre\" comme colonne vertébrale non \nseulement esthétique mais aussi fonctionnelle \ndu système a été le point de départ conceptuel \nde Modus. De la poutre centrale se développe \nen effet tout le reste, des pieds d’appui et de \nsoutien des assises, aux accessoires, des petits \ncompléments, aux accoudoirs et aux dossiers. \nModus est un système «ouvert«; quelque \nchose qui peut non seulement prendre des \nconfigurations différentes selon le projet \nspécifique, mais qui peut grandir avec le \ntemps, en suivant l’évolution de l’entreprise, \nen mettant en œuvre les éléments de temps \nà autre, en répondant au marché et à l’évo-\nlution des espaces publics et de travail. \nQUE\tPENSE-TU\tDE\tL’AVENIR\tDES\tES-\nPACES DE TRAVAIL? ILS ÉVOLUENT? \nET QUELLE EST L’IMPORTANCE DU \nDESIGN DANS LA MISE EN FORME \nDE CES ENVIRONNEMENTS?\nTC \nLes espaces de travail sont un thème \ntrès complexe et en constante évolution, nous \nsommes passés d’une approche cartésienne et \ncubique des postes de travail individuels à des \nespaces ouverts organiques, sans aucune hiér-\narchisation ni différenciation des espaces de tra-\nvail. Nous sommes arrivés à comprendre que ni \nl’un ni l’autre des deux extrêmes fonctionne et \nmaintenant on essaie d’hybrider les différentes \napproches en modulant le public et le privé, l’or-\nganique et le rationnel. La pandémie a ensuite \ndonné un autre coup de fouet en accélérant et \nparfois en renversant tous les raisonnements \nsur la nécessité et le sens de la présence phy-\nsique sur le lieu d’étude et de travail. Le design, \nen tant que récepteur et reprocesseur de la con-\ntemporanéité a pour tâche de s’insérer dans ce \ndébat en donnant forme et substance aux nou-\nveaux comportements en soutenant, en mettant \nen œuvre et en essayant de proposer de nou-\nvelles lectures et de nouveaux scénarios à par-\ntir de la discussion en cours. Le design, depuis \ntoujours, donne forme et substance aux scénar-\nios imaginés et là où le débat est plus dense et \ncomplexe, il a plus de liberté de mouvement et \nd’élan proactif.\nEN\tPARLANT\tDU\tSYSTÈME\tMODUS,\t–\nQU’EST-CE\tQUI\tLE\tREND\tUNIQUE\tET\t\nLE DISTINGUE DES AUTRES?\nTC \nLa possibilité de personnalisation, mal-\ngré le faible nombre d’éléments est le point fort \nde Modus. Il y a un autre aspect qui me rend \ntrès\theureux\tdu\trésultat\tfinal\tdu\tprojet\tet\tc’est\t\nquelque chose que nous avons essayé de viser \ndès le début. Malgré sa modularité et sa polyva-\nlence, Modus reste un meuble avec un langage \nloin du froid et fonctionnaliste de nombreux sys-\ntèmes modulaires. L’intention était de créer un \nproduit\tqui\tapparaisse\t\"fini\"\tdans\ttoutes\tses\tcon-\nfigurations,\ten\tévitant\tqu’il\tne\tsemble\ttoujours\t\nquelque chose d’incomplet ou une partie d’un \nsystème\tplus\tample.\tPour\tcela,\tdes\tconfigura-\ntions\tprédéfinies\tsont\tprévues,\tmais\tle\tsystème\t\npermet également la création de solutions en-\ntièrement personnalisées. En outre, pour garan-\ntir une conception réellement autonome, il est \nprévu l’intégration avec une batterie qui rend le \nsystème complètement indépendant.\nCOMMENT LA DURABILITÉ INFLU-\nENCE-T-ELLE\tTES\tPROCESSUS\tET\t\nLES PRODUITS QUE TU CONÇOIS?\nTC \nEn tant que designer, mon ap-\nproche de la durabilité dépend toujours du cli-\nent avec lequel je développe un projet. C’est \nquelque chose que nous, les concepteurs, de-\nvons être en mesure de \"manipuler\" mais qui \ndoit déjà être mis en œuvre par les entrepris-\nes avec lesquelles nous entrons en contact. \nDans ce cas, l’engagement a été de garder tous \nles éléments séparables et démontables, réus-\nsissant ainsi à satisfaire la personnalisation, la \ndésassemblabilité des éléments, un stockage plus \nefficace\tet\tmoins\tencombrant.\tQuand\ton\tparle\t\nde durabilité, on oublie souvent tout le proces-\nsus pour parler simplement de matériel de réali-\nsation. Une approche durable est une approche \nqui prend en compte toutes les étapes de la vie \nd’un produit, de la production à la distribution.\nCOMMENT\tTROUVE-TU\tUN\tÉQUILI-\nBRE ENTRE ESTHÉTIQUE ET FONC-\nTIONNALITÉ DANS TON TRAVAIL?\nTC \nLe débat sur la forme et la fonction est \nun débat qui se poursuit depuis l’aube de cette \ndiscipline et que je crois maintenant avoir épu-\nisé\tson\tsens\td’être.\tNous\tavons\tenfin\tcompris\t\nqu’un projet ne peut pas se passer des deux \nconcepts et qu’un bon projet est à la fois beau, \nbien fait et fonctionnel. Ne considérer qu’un seul \ndes deux concepts de vie à des projets boiteux \nqui durent le temps d’une saison.
