However, bringing \nin the expertise of outside professionals often \nmakes good business sense—especially in \nthose areas where inexperience could result \nin costly miscues.\nCreative Director Andrew Dull realized that fact \nearly on in the process of relocating his growing \nMichigan-based graphic design firm.\nConcept A opened its doors in 2008 in a \n1,000-square-foot storefront in Grand Haven, \nMich. Dull hired his first employee within two \nmonths of setting up shop—which, at the time, \nconsisted of little more than a couple tables \nand his MacBook Pro\n®.\nThe studio grew by an average of one employee \nper year through its first five years, and, by 2012, \nthe modest space could no longer adapt.\n“It quickly became clear that 1,000 square feet \nmaxed out at five people,” Dull said. “We were \non top of one another. We overheard every \nconversation. We only had a single, shared \nbathroom. It just became problematic.”\nThe close quarters were only part of the issue. \nDull also wanted Concept A’s space to provide a \nbetter experience for current employees, potential \nnew hires, and prospective clients.\n“Your space and your furniture can do a lot for \nyour brand perception,” Dull said. “That impacts \neverything from recruiting and business development \nto employee satisfaction and retention. So we \nneeded to find and furnish a space that could \nsupport what we are today and sustain us as we \ncontinue to grow.”\nWhen Dull began looking for new office space, it \ntook every bit of his creative vision to recognize the \npotential of a 100-year-old commercial building in \ndowntown Spring Lake, Mich., a resort town just \ndown the Lake Michigan shoreline from Concept A’s \noriginal location.\nThe building, which at different points in its history \nhad housed an undertaker, a hardware store, and \na surf\u002Fskateboard shop, had been vacant for seven \nyears.
