Reisberger   —   Willingly – let’s take  \na look at warm affusions, for instance. \nThey are performed at a temperature \n between 37 and 40 degrees in the neck  \nand back area. They are a gentle and \neffec tive way to help ease tense muscles. \nBy contrast, cold affusions are adminis-\ntered in cases of hip and knee joint inflam-\nmation, or for vein disorders. The facial \naffusion, however, is a beauty Treatment. \nIt improves blood circulation in the face \nand leads to firmer skin. The whole \n process only takes a matter of seconds: \nuse an affusion pipe or hose to direct  \nthe water up and down your right cheek \nthree times, then three times on your  \nleft cheek, and then across your forehead. \nFinish by making a further three rounds  \nof your face. Not much effort involved, but \nthe effect is obvious.\n \nAND THE FAMILIAR CONTRAST \nAFFUSIONS?\nJ. Reisberger   —   The warm water part \nlasts for a few minutes and the cold- \nwater part only lasts for a few seconds. \nAffusions administered at the start of a \ncourse of Kneipp Treatment are usually \nshorter. This allows the body to slowly get \nused to them. The specific temperature \nstimuli are then continuously increased  \nas the course of Kneipp Treatment \nprogres ses. The thing about affusions is \nthat generally speaking, if they are ad­\nministered above the pelvis they have a  \nstimulating effect, raise blood pressure, \nstrengthen the cardiovascular system and \nenhance the body’s natural defences.  \nBy contrast, affusions administered below \nthe pelvis have a calming effect, strengthen \nblood vessels and lower blood pressure.  \nThey also stimulate the body’s natural  \ndefences.\n \nHOW DO KNEIPP BATHS WORK?\nJ. Reisberger   —   Full baths, for in­\nstance can have both a stimulating and \ncalming effect. It depends which medi­\ncinal plants are added. The cold arm bath \nis also interesting, as it qualifies as a  \nsort of “Kneipp espresso”, so to speak.  \nIt is very fast­acting, very refreshing and \nimproves concentration.\n \nWHAT OTHER WATER \nAPPLICATIONS ARE THERE IN THE \nCONTEXT OF KNEIPP THERAPY?\nJ. Reisberger   —   Washing is another  ex­\nample. These are early applications which \n– because of resting muscle tone – are \ncarried out between five and six  \nin the morning. The body is washed with \na linen glove that has previously been \n immersed in cold water. Then the night­\ndress or pyjamas are put back on  \nand it’s back to bed. The body is well \nwrapped up, so that it warms up imme­\ndiately. You usually fall back into a deep \nsleep afterwards.\n \nAND WHAT IS THE EFFECT?\nJ. Reisberger — Washing in the Kneipp \ntherapy context has a balancing effect on \nso­called mental and autonomic system \nswings. Stumpe   —   Aquapressure and its \npossible impact are a variation of acu-\npressure, which plays an important role in \nTraditional Chinese Medicine. Like acu-\npressure, Aquapressure is based on the \nprinciples of yin and yang, qi life-force \n energy, meridians and acupuncture points \nmentioned above.\n \nCAN YOU BE MORE SPECIFIC?\nDr C. Stumpe   —   According to \nTraditional Chinese Medicine, common \nsymptoms such as tenseness or head-\naches occur when the flow of qi is dis-\nrupted. This can be caused by external \nfactors such as cold temperatures, wind, \nheat, wet conditions and dryness, or by \n internal factors. These include emotions \nsuch as anger or joy. The interplay of \nthese so-called exogenous and endoge-\nnous  factors creates imbalance in the \nflow of  energy and thus the physical \nsymptoms. \nSpecific stimulation of selected acupunc-\nture points harmonises the life-force \n energy. Problems such as tension in the \nhead, neck and shoulder area are  \nalleviated or prevented from happening in  \nthe first place. This in turn improves  \nthe sense of well-being and helps to in-\ncrease vitality. But acupressure can also \nhave a positive effect on the psyche, in \ncases of anxiety or insomnia, for instance.\n \nHOW MUCH OF THIS CAN BE \nTRANSFERRED TO AQUAPRESSURE?\nDr C. Stumpe   —   In acupressure, we \nuse parts of the body such as thumbs,  \nfingers, the ball of the thumb or elbows. \nThis is how we exert pressure on the \n meridians and the acupuncture points, to \nachieve the desired effect. In Aquapressure, \nthis function is taken over by the pressure \nof water. It leads to increased blood flow \nin the skin and muscles at the relevant \npoints and meridians. This is especially \napparent when combined with the right \namount of warmth. The medium of water  \nis also especially interesting because it \ncan take into account the basic action \n parameters of Chinese Medicine – intensity \nof pressure, location, duration and tem-\nperature – all at the same time. That is, \nthe central parameters which can have a \npositive  influence on our life-force energy. \nAquapressure actually helps us to ease \naway blockages and tension while taking \na shower. It can also be used for pre-\nvention. Because \neach colour has its own spectrum of \n activity. For instance, we know that the \ncolour yellow is uplifting and that blue has \na regenerative effect.
