It’s a collection of images, reflections \nand notes we have gathered while travelling the world over. \nI started inventing and making lamps at the end of the 1980’s \nwith the idea of creating a collection that is exactly like the one \nwe are presenting here today. The fundamental ingredients we \nemploy are simplicity, weightlessness, emotion, invention and \namazement. \nOur language is that of the lamps and lighting solutions we \ncome up with. These are the words we use to tell our stories. \nThey are stories of light, because light in itself is a story. \nLight provides us with sudden solutions and detail we had \nforgotten. It creates fullness or emptiness. It can take away, \nor underline gestures and expressions of the people around it. \nWe need it to see things, but also to seduce, to provide a sense \nof mystery, to hint at metaphors and provide scenery destined \nto become the ever-changing street theatre of our lives.\nOne of the biggest problems we face while coming up with \nnew lighting solutions is to try to imagine lamps that have \nnever been seen before. \nWe are always trying to create things that go beyond \ntechnology, colour or form. We’re searching for something \nelse: invention and uniqueness, narration and passion. \nOur creations are generous, they enjoy lighting even more than \nthey enjoy being seen. This is what makes them so special.\nI have always searched for a personal and rather heretic vision \nof light, by heresy, I mean freedom, experimentation, curiosity. \nThat’s why you won’t find all our lamps here, nor will we inform \nyou as to all the characteristics of the ones we have decided \nto present. \nIncontroluce is not, nor was intended to be, a complete \ncatalogue of our products, but a kind of emotional landscape \nof my world. Eppure non c’è stata una \nvera e propria illuminazione, un momento preciso in cui ho \ndeciso che avrei creato lampade e non, per esempio, flipper.\nSemplicemente, è successo.\nCosì, nel 1988 ho iniziato a inventare e a costruire lampade \nin una minuscola stanza adattata a laboratorio, nel centro \nstorico di Piacenza. Di una cosa sono certo: quelle prime \ncreazioni mi hanno offerto la possibilità di esprimere la \nmia personalità e trasformarla in un progetto di vita. Erano \nlampade ancora molto spontanee, ma trasmettevano già il \ndesiderio di comunicare un concetto, prima ancora che di \nilluminare spazi. Progetti fatti mettendo insieme quello che \nc’era, sempre con l’idea di fare il meglio con il meno.\nFotografai quelle prime creazioni, sviluppai le immagini e le \nincollai su dei fogli di cartone: il mio primo catalogo.\nPer me era, e in un certo senso è ancora, il più bel catalogo \ndel mondo: semplicissimo, vero. Portandolo sottobraccio, ho \niniziato a girare per negozi, cercando di vendere le mie idee.\nIl tempo è passato, il mondo è andato avanti e oggi desidero \nfarvi conoscere quelle primissime creazioni.\nEccole qua: sono lampade non più disponibili, sparse in \nchissà quali luoghi, situazioni, negozi, magazzini.\nParti di me che hanno percorso le vie del mondo: quando ci \npenso, mi auguro che siano ancora vive, intente a illuminare \nscenari che non conosco, ma che a volte mi diverto a \nimmaginare.\nErano invenzioni spontanee e forse ingenue, ma contenevano \nun’anima: la stessa anima delle lampade che continuo a \nrealizzare.\nIt all began thanks to my father. Overall, he taught me how to look for, \nrecognise and appreciate beauty.\nI remember in particular putting together three things with him:  \na pinball machine, a telegraph and a lamp.\nI have always worked with light, and yet I can’t remember a \nmoment of revelation, a precise point at which I decided I \nwould create lamps and not, for example, pinball machines. \nIt just happened.\nSo, in 1988 I started coming up with ideas and putting together \nlamps in a little room I called my laboratory in the city centre \nof Piacenza.Of one thing I am sure: those first creations gave \nme the possibility to express my personality and turn it into a \nlife-long project.
