Gold und Rot, Braun und \nSchwarz stehen für ihre Art-déco-Zeit, in der \nsie bereits Gouachen und Collagen anfertigte, \ndie als Webvorlagen dienten. Mit ihren \nTeppichen – in den avantgardistischen Zirkeln \ndes Rive Gauche heiß begehrt – wollte Eileen \nGray „ein Zuhause für Menschen“ schaffen. \nGegen gesellschaftliche Vorurteile setzte sie ihr \nSpiel mit Identitäten. Als 44-Jährige eröffnete \nsie eine Galerie mit dem männlich klingenden \nNamen Jean Désert. Weiß und Schwarz, Silber \nund Grau wurden nun ihre bevorzugten Farben; \nstatt aus dunklem Holz formte sie Möbel aus \nblinkendem Stahlrohr. Stillstand kannte die \nKünstlerin nicht, und so baute die Autodidaktin \nan der Mittelmeerküste nahe Monaco die Villa \nE1027, heute das ikonische Gray’sche Gesamt- \nkunstwerk schlechthin. Blau, Gelb und Weiß  \n– die mediterranen Sommerfarben strahlten in \ndieser glücklichen Zeit, bevor Eileen Gray \nwährend des Zweiten Weltkrieges als Architek- \ntin und Designerin in Vergessenheit geriet. \nDennoch arbeitete und malte sie drei Jahrzehn- \nte lang diszipliniert weiter. Sie blieb dabei stets \neine ‚private Malerin‘, ihre Bilder wurden nie \nöffentlich ausgestellt. Doch die Gouachen und \nCollagen bewahrte sie für die Nachwelt auf, \nsorgfältig auf Karton geklebt, auf der Rückseite \nbeschriftet und manche auch signiert. \nIrlands Nationalfarbe Grün ist auch die Farbe \nder Hoffnung, die Eileen Gray nie verließ: \nSie träumte davon, in Dublin „etwas von Dauer \nzu bekommen“, und ein Vierteljahrhundert \nnach ihrem Tod im Jahr 1976 wurde dieser \nTraum tatsächlich wahr: mit einer Eileen-Gray- \nAusstellung im National Museum of Ireland, \nderen Eröffnungsplakat den Sessel Non \nConformist zeigte. Mit der Aufnahme erster \nTeppiche nach ihren Entwürfen ins Sortiment \nvon Aram Designs Ltd. im Jahr 2003 und \nClassiCon 2004, erfüllte sich auch der letzte \ngroße Wunsch der Gestalterin, dass aus ihren \n„alten Entwürfen“ noch einmal neue, ganz be- \nsondere textile Kunstwerke entstehen mögen. \nFree, versatile, modern and courageous – as a  \ndesigner and as a woman, Eileen Gray rejected  \nrigid boundaries, both in her work and in love. \nShe was ahead of her time in many respects. \nBorn in 1878 in Ireland, she studied art in Lon-\ndon before moving to Paris at the beginning of \nthe 20th century, where she became a cheeky \ngarçonne with a bob cut: she drove a car, trav-\nelled across the ocean to America, to Africa  \nfor ﬁeld studies and was one of the ﬁrst women \nto pilot an aeroplane. Gold and red, brown  \nand black represent her art deco period, during \nwhich she was already making gouaches  \nand collages that served as weaving patterns. \nWith her rugs – much sought after in the \navant-garde circles of the Rive Gauche – Eileen \nGray wanted to create “a home for people”. \nShe challenged social prejudices with her play \non identities. At the age of 44, she opened \na gallery with the masculine-sounding name \nJean Désert. White and black, silver and grey \nbecame her preferred colours; instead of dark \nwood, she created furniture out of shining \nsteel tubing. Stagnation was alien to her, and \nso the self-taught artist designed and built the \nVilla E1027 on the Mediterranean coast near \nMonaco, today Gray’s iconic gesamtkunstwerk  \npar excellence. Blue, yellow and white, the \nMediterranean summer colours, shone brightly \nin those auspicious times before, during the \nSecond World War, Eileen Gray fell into oblivion \nas an architect and designer. Nevertheless, \nshe continued her disciplined work and painting  \nfor three decades. She always remained  \na ‘private painter’, her paintings were never \nexhibited publicly. But she preserved the \ngouaches and collages for posterity, carefully \nglued to cardboard, inscribed on the rear  \nside, some even signed. \nIreland’s national colour green is also the colour \nof hope, something that never abandoned \nEileen Gray. She dreamed of “receiving some-\nthing enduring” in Dublin, and a quarter of  \na century after her death in 1976, this dream  \nactually came true: with an Eileen Gray exhibi-\ntion at the National Museum of Ireland, where \nthe poster for the opening featured the Non \nConformist armchair. Ein Ort, in dem ein \nreiches kulturelles Erbe und ein traditioneller \nLebensstil bewahrt werden. Ein Teil dessen  \nist auch das Wissen um die Verarbeitung der \nnepalesischen Nessel als Garn für Stoffe. \nDieses Verfahren wurde verfeinert, um 100% \npﬂanzliche Teppiche herzustellen: ein Novum \nfür die Eileen Gray-Teppichkollektion.\nIn weiten Wäldern wächst rund um Jiri die  \ndort beheimatete Nessel (1) – auch Himalaya- \nNessel genannt – wild und auf natürliche \nWeise. Nach einem Sommer in voller Blüte \nwerden im Herbst die getrockneten Stiele \ngepﬂückt und in einzelne Fasern getrennt (2). \nZurück im Dorf wird das Nesselgewächs in \nmehreren Arbeitsgängen von Hand bearbeitet \n(3) und in frischem Quellwasser gewaschen \n(4), weichgeklopft und getrocknet. Für eine \nbessere Farbwiedergabe wird es am Ende  \nmit weißem Lehm aufgehellt (5). Der Lehm \nkommt direkt aus der Region und wird von  \nden Einwohnern auch zum Häuserbau genutzt. \nNach einer langen Trocknungszeit werden  \ndie Fasern auseinandergezogen (6) und ähnlich \nwie bei Schafswolle in Handarbeit zu Fäden \ngesponnen (7), eingefärbt und geknüpft (8).\nTeppiche aus nepalesischer Nessel sind zu \n100% pﬂanzlich und entstehen in einem völlig \nnachhaltigen Verfahren. Die wild wachsenden \nPﬂanzen benötigen keine künstlichen Dünge- \noder Pﬂanzenschutzmittel und das zur Verarbei- \ntung der Fasern benötigte Wasser wird zur \nBewässerung der Felder weiterverwendet. Die \nFarbpigmente sind umweltverträglich, getestet  \nnach OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. Nesselfäden \nsind besonders lang und stabil und gut zu rei- \nnigen. Die ungleichmäßige Farbaufnahme der \nNesselfasern ergibt eine ganz eigene Ästhetik \ngepaart mit einem leicht seidenartigen Glanz. \n5\n6\n7\n8\n9\nGreen forests, wild rivers and snowcapped \nmountains: the region around Jiri (9), a town \nhigh up in the Himalayas, is also referred to  \nas the Switzerland of Nepal. A place where a \nrich cultural heritage and traditional lifestyle  \nare still preserved. Part of that heritage is the \nknowledge of how to process the Nepalese \nnettle into yarn for manufacturing textiles. This \nprocess has been reﬁned to create 100% \nplant-based rugs: a new material for the Eileen \nGray rug collection. \nThe native nettle (1) – also called Himalayan \nnettle – grows wild and naturally in the vast \nforests around Jiri. Following the summer \nbloom, the dried stems are harvested in the \nautumn and separated into individual ﬁbres (2). \nBack in the village, the nettle plants are pro- \ncessed manually (3) and, using several different \nstages, washed in fresh mountain rain water \nwithout any additives (4), beaten soft and dried. \nAt the end of the process and for better colour \nrendering, the nettle is eventually lightened \nwith white clay (5), which is sourced directly \nfrom the region. The locals also use it to build \nhouses. After a long period of drying, the \nﬁbres are plucked apart (6) and, similar to \nsheep’s wool, are spun into threads (7), dyed \nand knotted (8). \nRugs made of Nepalese nettle are 100% plant- \nbased and created using an entirely sustainable \nmethod. For their cultivation, the wild-growing \nplants do not require any other resources such \nas arable land or water – and no artiﬁcial ferti- \nlisers or pesticides are used. The water required \nto process the ﬁbres is reused to irrigate the \nﬁelds. The colour pigments are environmentally \nfriendly and tested according to the OEKO-TEX® \nSTANDARD 100. Nettle ﬁbres are particularly \nlong, durable and easy to clean.
