Dagli “idoli egiziachi” all’astrolabio, dalla corona di \npenne indo-americana al planisfero cinese, dagli animali im-\nbalsamati agli alambicchi. Ma già nel Medio Evo meteoriti, \ncoccodrilli impagliati, uova di struzzo, corna di unicorno, arti-\ngli di grifone erano esposti nelle dimore di illustri personaggi. \nCome anche capitelli romani riutilizzati, urne cinerarie riciclate \ncome acquasantiere, antichi sarcofagi. Questa mescolanza, dal \nMedio Evo raggiunse, moltiplicata, lo scenario delle rivoluzioni \nscientifiche fra Sei e Settecento, e non si fermò lì. Oggi che il \ndigitale tutto smaterializza, la Wunderkammer ci riporta all’e-\nsperienza della concretezza, al viaggio nella memoria attraver-\nso la fisicità degli oggetti. Perché “niuna cosa entra ad abitar \nnel palagio dell’intelletto che passata non sia per la porta ne-\ncessaria dei sensi”.\nDuring the 17th century Manfredo Settala created the Musae-\num Septalianum in Milan. It was one of the first Wunderkam-\nmer, or “room of wonders”, a collection of naturalia, artificialia, \nmirabilia and exotica capable of arousing both surprise and cu-\nriosity in people. The collection featured “Egyptian gods” and \nthe astrolabe, feathered Native American heardresses, Chinese \nmaps and animals stuffed in alembic. But already in the Mid-\ndle Ages meteorites, stuffed croccodiles, ostrich eggs, unicorn \nhorns and griffon vulture claws were displayed in homes of \nfamous people. Roman columns, cremation urns used as holy \nwater fonts and ancient sarcophages too. This mixture of arti-\nfacts achieved in the Middle Ages spread out in the scientific \nrevolution between the 16 and17th century, and went even \nfurther on. In the aftermath of the digital trend, the Wunder-\nkammer takes us back to concrete experiences, on memorable \ntrips through real physical objects. Quando mi avevano dato un bacio \nal loro arrivo, ne avevo memorizzato il profumo. La fragranza \nmi ha permesso di trovare la persona giusta per ogni mante-\nau. Avevo 8 anni, e un destino davanti. Oggi non abito più a \nGrasse ma a Parigi, quinto arrondissement. La mia casa è uno \nscrigno luminoso, sospeso tra passato e futuro. Soffitti Haus-\nsmanniani, cornici classiche, stucchi, specchi, boiserie bian-\nche, alte porte finestre, pavimenti preziosi. La mia collezione \nd’arte fa invidia a molti. Ma il profumo intenso del successo \nnon ha cancellato la mia sensibilità per le fragranze. Ai miei \nstudenti dell’Ecole Supérieure du Parfum ricordo questo passo \ndi Süskind: “Colui che dominava gli odori, dominava il cuore \ndegli uomini. Poiché gli uomini potevano chiudere gli occhi \ndavanti alla grandezza, davanti all’orrore, davanti alla bellezza, \ne turarsi le orecchie davanti a melodie o a parole seducenti. Ma \nnon potevano sottrarsi al profumo”. \nWhen I was a child my mother held a tea party for her friends \nin our house in Rue de Palmiers.  In the end she asked me to \nhand over all the coats… I panicked… What shall I do? Natu-\nrally, without thinking about it, I did the right thing: I smelled \nevery single coat. I had memorized each guests perfume as \nthey kissed me, upon arrival. So, I was able to give back every \nsingle manteau to the right person. I was an 8 year old child, \nwith a bright future ahead. I no longer live in Grasse now, but \nin Paris in the 5th arrondissement. My bright cosy house is \ncaught between the past and the future. Hausmann ceilings, \nclassical cornices, ornamental plastering, mirrors, white wood-\nen panelling, high French windows and precious flooring. My \nart collection is the envy of many. The intense perfume of \nsuccess has not cancelled my sensibility to fragrance. I often \nremind my students at the ‘Ecole Supérieure du Parfum’ this \npassage from Süskind: “People who dominate scents, dominate \nthe heart of men. For people can close their eyes to greatness, \nto horrors, to beauty and their ears to melodies and seducing \nwords.
