Where does your collaboration come \nfrom?\nWe have been following the company since we \nwere students. In Galicia there are not many firms \nthat are committed to design as a strategic factor, \nwhich is why it was always in our minds to be able to \nmake some kind of collaboration. For us, a·emotional \nlight represents an open door to product design \nin general and lighting design in particular. In the \nprevious stage, and in spite of trying to get closer, \nit was not possible to develop any collaboration. \nWith the change of management, we resumed \ncontact and progressively a professional and \npersonal affinity arose, which naturally resulted in \ndifferent collaborations. The human component is \nfundamental for the relationship to be fertile and \nlong-lasting.\nES ¿Cómo definiríais a·emotional light en una \npalabra? ¿De dónde surge vuestra colaboración?\nSeguimos a la empresa desde nuestra época \nde estudiantes. En Galicia no son frecuentes las \nempresas que apuestan por el diseño como factor \nestratégico, por eso siempre estuvo en nuestra \nmente poder realizar algún tipo de colaboración. \nPara nosotros, a·emotional light representa una \npuerta abierta al diseño de producto en general y \nde iluminación en particular. En la etapa anterior, \ny pese a intentar ese acercamiento, no fué posible \ndesarrollar ninguna colaboración. Con el cambio de \ndirección retomamos el contacto y progresivamente \nva surgiendo una afinidad tanto profesional como \npersonal, que de forma natural se concreta en \ndiferentes colaboraciones. La componente humana \nes fundamental para que la relación resulte fértil y \nduradera.\n14 · 15\n[EN]   What is your relationship with light?\nWe always try to look for very contained levels of \nlighting, where the light contributes a suggestive \nfactor to the space without making it obvious. \nThis way of lighting has been part of our \npersonal imaginary since childhood. Over time, a \nmisinterpretation of technology has distorted this \nrelationship between light and space, which we need \nto rethink.\n[ES]   ¿Cómo es vuestra relación con la luz?\nIntentamos siempre buscar niveles de iluminación \nmuy contenidos, donde la luz aporte un factor de \nsugestión del espacio sin llegar a evidenciarlo. \nEsa forma de iluminar forma parte de nuestro \nimaginario desde la infancia. What is the common thread running \nthrough these three collections?\nWithout intending to, it is common for references \nto nature to appear in our work. We feel particularly \ncomfortable using natural materials such as stone \nand wood. Apart from this affinity of languages, we \nattach great importance to the multi-sensoriality of \nthe materials: textures, scents... Especially at a time \nwhen the visual overrides the rest of the senses. In \naddition to working with materials and languages \nthat are close to us, we try to look for meeting points \nand interactions with light. We must understand how \neach material expresses itself and what potential it \noffers in the context of lighting. We must not lose \nsight of the fact that the aim is to work with light; \nmaterials and forms are only the tools to achieve \nthis.\n[ES]   De esta colaboración han salido tres \ncolecciones de luminarias: Parga, Nebra y \nCambo. ¿Cuál es el hilo conductor de estas tres \ncolecciones?\nSin pretenderlo, es habitual que en nuestro trabajo \naparezcan referencias a la naturaleza. Utilizando \nmateriales naturales como la piedra y la madera nos \nsentimos especialmente cómodos. A parte de esa \nafinidad de lenguajes, damos mucha importancia \na la multisensorialidad de los materiales: texturas, \nolores… Sobre todo en una época donde lo visual \nanula el resto de los sentidos. Además de trabajar \ncon materiales y lenguajes que nos resultan \npróximos intentamos buscar puntos de encuentro e \ninteracciones con la luz. Debemos entender como se \nexpresa cada material y que potencialidades ofrece \nen el contexto de la iluminación. No debemos de \nperder de vista que el objetivo es trabajar con la luz; \nlos materiales y las formas sólo son herramientas \npara conseguirlo.\n[ES] Parga nace de un gesto \nde provocación, al utilizar un \nmaterial como la piedra en el \ncontexto de la iluminación.\n[EN] Parga was born out of a \nprovocative gesture, using a \nmaterial such as stone in the \ncontext of lighting.\n[EN]   What is the origin of Parga’s design?\nParga was born out of a provocative gesture, using a \nmaterial such as stone in the context of lighting. To \nbegin with, we can understand that it is an unnatural \nmaterial in this environment, as it is heavy and \ncomplex to work with. That was the challenge, to \ncreate from this supposed weakness a strength that \nwould give us personality and differentiation in an \nincreasingly standardised segment. There was also a \ncomponent ‘glocal’ of creating a piece with a global \nvocation from a very local starting point, such as the \nuse of small fragments of discarded granite.\n[ES]   ¿Cuál es el origen del diseño de Parga?\nParga nace de un gesto de provocación, al utilizar \nun material como la piedra en el contexto de la \niluminación. De entrada podemos entender que \nes un material antinatural en este contexto, al \nresultar pesada y compleja de trabajar. Ese era el \nreto, conseguir crear de esa supuesta debilidad \nuna fortaleza que nos aportara personalidad y \ndiferenciación en un segmento cada vez más \nestandarizado. También existía una componente \n«glocal», de proponer una pieza con una vocación \nglobal desde un elemento de partida muy local, como \nera el uso de pequeños fragmentos de granito de \ndescarte.\n[EN]   How can pieces born of the artisan tradition \nbe integrated into a modern project?\nIt is essential to dissociate craftsmanship and \ntradition. Craftsmanship can have a strong \ncontemporary vocation. Craftsmanship is simply \na tool; we must understand the limitations and \nopportunities it offers in order to get the best out \nof it. Craftsmanship is also flexible enough to allow \nfor variations and adaptations to specific projects. \nAnother potential of handmade production lies in the \ndelicacy of the finishes and manufacturing details \nthat the craftsman’s hand imprints. On the other \nhand, it is essential to understand where handmade \nproduction adds value, so as not to slow down and \nmake the piece unnecessarily expensive.\n[ES]   ¿Cómo pueden integrarse piezas que nazcan \nde la tradición artesana en algún proyecto \nmoderno?\nEs fundamental disociar artesanía y tradición. Un \ntrabajo artesanal puede recoger una fuerte vocación \ncontemporánea. La artesanía simplemente es una \nherramienta; debemos entender las limitaciones \ny oportunidades que ofrece para sacar el mejor \nrendimiento. Algo propio de la artesanía es la \nflexibilidad que proporciona en cuanto a admitir \nvariaciones y adaptaciones a determinados \nproyectos.
